Online job app. asks for desired $, won't take "Open." What to do?

I'm filling in an online job application and one of the required questions is what my desired salary is. Obviously, I don't want to give a number right away. The field only accepts numbers, not text like "TBD," "Open," "Negotiable," etc. What should I put? 0.00, 1.00, something else? Thanks.

  • I would try to figure out what you need and put a  reasonable range.

  • It depends what you are applying for and how much experience you have. Take a look on websites that give you ranges for salary for that type of position, like www.glassdoor.com or www.salary.com. This way, you're not being random and pulling some number out of the sky that might not fit that position. GL!
  • I Agree with PP - you should figure out what you want to be making doing that role.

The past few times I've interviewed I put a salary range about $10k higher than what I make now. The worst that will happen is they will inform you of what the actual salary range is for that particular job if they're considering moving forward with hiring you.

  • I'm always afraid that if I put too high of a salary in there, that they employer won't even call me for an interview. Definitely check out those websites that PP listed to see what the salary range should be. I think some of those sites even tell you based on where you live so you can get a better idea of what it should be.
