What did you (or are planning to) get your kid for their first birthday & first Christmas?
Jack's first birthday is two weeks before Christmas so I'm feeling the pressure of choosing gifts for both.
Since he really won't know that he's getting gifts, I'd like to get something sentimental. I am craft-challenged so I'm not sure I could make anything.
And what kind of toys do 12-18 mo kids play with? If I get toys, I'd like to get something he can grow in to.
I'm already thinking of a personalized name puzzle but that's all I've got. Oh, and I already collect an ornament for each year that represents something that happened that year for when he's older and has his own tree.
I appreciate any suggestions!

Re: 1st birthday/christmas ideas
For his first birthday, we got him a wagon. He LOVES it. It's plastic so I have no qualms about taking it out in the snow when the time comes.
He was very small for his first Christmas so we mostly got him clothes and some small toys. We didn't spend very much. We were also on one income so that factored in. This year we probably won't go overboard either since he just got a ton of new stuff for his birthday. I think I might do the name puzzle for Christmas.
my biggest suggestion is look for toys for 1-2. since there isn't a birthday in between we just stock piled toys away and brought them out slowly for when age was right.
The name puzzle sounds awesome! She got plenty of other things, so we put the money we would have spent into her bank account. She didn't notice. We will probably do something similar this year - a couple small gifts and money in her account.
C really liked her activity table - fisher price or baby einstien makes them. She also really got into books around her first bday.
I'm interested to see what others recommend for toys too.

I had to google this to get in the loop so to speak. I am not sure which one you are considering and how much these things usually cost, but Overstock has one. I am not sure if it is a good deal, but I figured I'd pass it along.
I know friends who have gotten this one:

We just got Ais a few little things for her first two Christmases so far. She doesn't really know any better, and we figured why spend a ton of $$ and just buy more stuff to clutter our house...so we used money we would have spent on stuff to go on Christmas themed outings with her, like Sesame Place's Furry Christmas, the Adventure Aquarium's Christmas brunch, etc. This year I've gotten her a few more things than before, but still didn't go overboard.
She is obsessed with cameras and seeing her pictures, so I bought her a kids' digital camera from Crayola. I actually got it half price through one of those discount sites...Zulily or Totsy- I can't remember which. I also nabbed some Melissa & Doug wooden puzzles she likes to play with at the library real cheap through one of those sites.
On a side note, if my kid gets one more babydoll for Christmas I am going to scream.
I love this idea. I may have to start doing this with my nieces and nephews.
My DD's 1st bday is in two weeks. I just got her the Cozy Coupe on sale at TRU. She is walking and loves things she can push around.

I'm waiting to see what she gets at her little party before deciding what to get her for christmas. My friends were just recommending the B Toys that are at Target. I am also debating getting her a Pottery Barn everywhere chair.
Drum set?
For the last kid we know that turned 1, we got him wooden blocks. He might be too young for them now, but H and I LOVED them as a child.
We've also gotten kids MegaBlok things and they seem to like them.
I second wooden blocks. Hunter find it hysterical to knock down towers and he is starting to learn to stack them too.
Also, someone gave Hunter a plastic sled for his birthday and he goes apesh!t over this thing. We pull him around in the grass, the living room and the kitchen and he loves it. It's really simple, slides right under the sofa and has a string on the front for pulling.
