Baby Names (Weekly TTC chit chat)

Instead of talking about temping, charting etc....lets have some fun!

What are your top three baby boy names?

What are your top three baby girl names?

Are you planning on using any family names?

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

Anything else you want to share about baby names?

Also...I need your opinions:

My H is names Michael, so is my brother, father, FIL and a few of my uncles. I really have always dreamed of having a boy and naming him Michael (before I even met H) so now I'm wondering if another one would just make things crazy or if it would be ok....MIL told me not to name a baby Michael since they're are so many in our family already...but I don't know, I love the name!

Re: Baby Names (Weekly TTC chit chat)

  • Yay! A fun chat today! Since we are not TTC right now, I can atleast join in on this one.

What are your top three baby boy names? Gabriel is my top choice and H likes it as well. If we have a boy, we plan on this name. H's parents are from Portugaul and will no doubtly pronounce it Gabrielle (girls name). Other names I like are Lucas and Joshua or Ryan.

What are your top three baby girl names? Sarah is a top choice. I like Claire,as that was my paternal grandmother's name. I was shot down on that pretty quickly. Grace is another top name. And I am not sure on a third.

Are you planning on using any family names? Well, I don't think so, unless I get my way of Claire. But, it's doubtful. Maybe middle names. But I haven't thought that far.

Now, I think that if you really love the name Michael, you should use it and not listen to anyone. It's not their decision to make. You can always call him Mike or Mikey, or come up with some other nickname. Or, you could use it as a middle name and you still get to use the name you like.

  • What are your top three baby boy names?

    Michael Christopher

    Lucas Michael

I can't think of any others......

What are your top three baby girl names?

    Charlotte Ann

    Eliana Christine

Gabriella (not sure of middle name...maybe Christine)

Are you planning on using any family names? yes, Michael (Dad, brother, H, and FIL) and Ann is the middle name of my mom, SIL and MIL.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

Yes, I always check to see if I know anyone who recently named their child a name that I'm considering...I also think about people I know/knew who had these names themselves and depending on my relationship with them, I'll cross it off the list. I also do check celeb baby names.

Anything else you want to share about baby names?

Well I have a bit of a funny situation...H and most of his family, and also my family have very strong Boston accents...so if we choose a name like Carter for example...they'd pronounce his name "CaHtaH" lol so I have to be careful with names that I think sound good (since I don't have that strong accent!)

  • What are your top three baby boy names? Our first choice for a boy's name is Thomas Wendell. Our second choice is William Richard (or Richard William) because it's both of our father's names.

What are your top three baby girl names? Our first choice for a girl's name is Natalie Elizabeth. We don't really have any others picked out.

Are you planning on using any family names? Every generation of women on H's Mom's side has the middle name Elizabeth. It's a tradition he wants to continue and I think it's sweet!

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child? I do think of people I know with that name and what they're like. So if I knew someone who was a jerk with that name we probably won't use it! I don't think a celebrity baby name would sway me either way. Although I would probably hate it if they chose my name around the same we were having a kid because I'm sure at first everyone would think that was why.

Anything else you want to share about baby names?  We chose Wendell as a middle name because it is the name of the first street we lived on together. It was H's idea.

CPM - I think if you like the name Michael but are hesitant to use it, that you should consider using it as a middle name. That way you're still using it but not really adding another Michael to the group.

  • What are your top three baby boy names? Jack, Chase, Grant (but DH doesn't like this)

What are your top three baby girl names? Clara, Annaliese, Leah (but it sounds so similar to Clara, I doubt I'd ever use it)

Are you planning on using any family names? Yes, this baby girl will be Clara after my grandmother.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?  I would not name our baby the same name as a close friend or family member's baby.

Anything else you want to share about baby names?  I like a lot of names (especially boys' names) that end with N, but because our last name does too, we've vetoed this.  I know it is silly, but I don't like the sound.  Also, DH loves the girl's name Marlee (after Bob Marley) and he won't listen to me that it is now associated with a dog (Marlee and Me).  I feel like it could be a battle if we have another daughter.

That is a tough one.  That is a lot of Michaels in one family!  Honestly, I'd probably use it as a middle name, but it is your child and if you and DH are OK with it, go for it!

  • What are your top three baby boy names?

    1. Nash

    2. David (after my H)

    3. Declan

What are your top three baby girl names?

    1. Eleanor

    2. Cecelia

Are you planning on using any family names?

Nash, is my grandma's maiden name. Me and H love it and with our last name he sounds like a professional athlete already.

Eleanor is my other grandmothers first name...again with our last name it just flows...we would call her Ellie or Elle when she is older.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

Our name choices are rare so Im hoping no one close to us picks it before we decide to TTC.   I like names that can go across the ages that you not always thinking of an old lady or a little girl that can be changed as you get older...however most people still call me Lyssa instead of Melissa.

"Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly"
  • What are your top three baby boy names?- Connor, Owen, Liam What are your top three baby girl names?- Natalie, Charlotte, Claire Are you planning on using any family names?- Probably for middle names. H father's name, Greg and my mothers name, Marcelle When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child? - Google names, how the name sounds together, if the initials spell out anything weird. Just making sure the kid won't be made fun of.Anything else you want to share about baby names?

  • My list of names have changed so much over the years!  When I was younger I had a list of baby names (much younger, haha!) and they were all traditional names with odd spellings. I got over that :)

I still lean towards traditional names.

    Top 3 Boys:
H's family's first born boys are always GMC.  I love the idea of continuing this tradition, even though I have realized I'm not a super fan of lots of 'G' names. Especially when you pair them with an M middle name, and our last name.  I like Graham, but wouldn't want that double M.  I overthink things. :) I do want the middle name to be Matthew, is my brother's name.  We already have a Greg in the family, as we as some other G's I'd consider.  This will be tough.

     Top 3 Girls:
I really like Alison Joan.  Joan is my mother and H's grandmother, so middle name Joan is set. I love the idea of having a girl's nickname be AJ, and H's sisters first/middle initials are AJ.  Jane is my grandmother, and I love the name, so I would defintely want a second girl to be a Jane.

    Family Names:
I guess I covered that..  Yes, most of our names are family names...  My first name is my mother's maiden name, which I love... so I would happily continue this. Sadly, my maiden name is not really appropriate for a first name, so we'll find other ways. H's sister has said that her first child will be named her maiden name.

     Google/Celeb/Friends:
I have spent many years working in schools & day cares, so I feel like that has influenced my choices more than friends or family.  My family is sort of huge, so we do have some repeat names, and we just deal with it.  There is usually enough of an age difference that we have a Big X and a Little X to differentiate.

As for the Michael situation, I think you should name him Michael if you want to name him Michael.  He can go by his middle name, or any other nickname should you choose, but if you liked the name before H's family, and also like the idea of adding to the tradition, then go for it!  :)

  • We're not TTC yet, but I had a dream last night that I was pregnant and was really happy about it :)

What are your top three baby boy names?

I only have one really- Nathan.   I love love love that name!

Other names I like: Christopher, Brandon

I used to like the name Cole, but I'm kinda iffy about it now.  Boys names are hard!

What are your top three baby girl names?

    1. Alyssa (Christine or Marie are possible middle names)

    2. Kirsten (Alanna or Elizabeth as a middle name)

Are you planning on using any family names?

H and FIL are both named Richard, so we'll probably make it Nathan's middle name :)

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

I have googled names before to get ideas. Mostly, I just don't want my kids to have to share their name with 10 other kids in school. I don't know anyone with the names that I like which is why I like them so much, haha

Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl?

    Yes

Would you share your top names with people while expecting?

Probably... but only if they asked.

  • What are your top three baby boy names?

Jack Gordon would be the one that so far we'd got with if/when we get pregnant and have a boy.  I also like Nathaniel (Nate),  and Samuel (Sam). Boy # 2 would have the middle name Blair

What are your top three baby girl names?

Emilia (Emm or Emmy) Marie, Kenzie, Juliana (Jules)

Are you planning on using any family names?

Gordon is my dad's name, he passed away, and though i've always loved Jack, it just occured to me a little while ago that dad's name was Gordon John, and Jack is a derivative of John.. so I really like that it's his name.. but not. Blair if we have boy number two is FIL's name and Marie is both my mom's and MIL's middle name.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

It would depend for me WHO had named their child that. H's best friend's wife is pregnant right now, so i'm just waiting to see what they have and what they name it. We wouldn't use the same name as them, for example, becuase our kids will grow up together. However, H's family is HUGE so it can be hard to find a name that someone hasn't already used there. So far we're safe on all fronts on names that I like. Also nick names do effect what i'd name my kid... we seem fairly safe on all fronts right now.

Anything else you want to share about baby names?

H's best friends that are pregnant, i was talking names with her and said that we'd pretty much decided on names. According to her, that changes once you're actually pregnant, so we'll see I guess.

I want to find out what we're having... H is on board for whatever, I will try to keep my name selections a secret though.

On the Michael issue, i'd probably use it as a middle name if you still wanted to go there :)

  • What are your top three baby boy names? We really don't have like a top 3 we just have like 1 picked out lol.

Ethan Joseph or Landon- this would be if we had 2 boys

What are your top three baby girl names? Same thing with this

    Emma Addison

Are you planning on using any family names? Joseph is H's name so we knew we wanted that in their somewhere. Instead of using names we went with initials mine are AM so here middle andl ast name would be AM same thing with a boys middle name and last name H's is JM so a boy would have JM.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

Somewhat celebs don't effect it but I don't want my child to have the same name as every other kid we know. Case in point SIL and I have the same first name and we married brothers so now we have the same first and last name which is confusing for everyone already.

On the Michael issue by OP: I would say use it as a middle name. Obviously the name is special to you and H and yes there are a lot so it could be confusing but if it isn't the name he directly goes by then it's not that confusing.

  • **New Questions**

Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl?

Nope I want to be completely surprised so I don't want to know until he/she makes their entrance into the world! I'm an 100% a planner, so this decision isn't easy for me since I'd love to decorate, buy clothes etc, but this is the one thing that I want to wait and be surprised about in life.

Would you share your top names with people while expecting?

    Nope!

  • New questions:

no way could I not find out I'm a total control freak!

Tell people: I can't keep anything from anyone ...and me and h already refer to our future children by name...its probrarly bad etiquette or bad luck somewhere but I think it's a cute thing that we do!

"Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly"
  • **New Questions**

Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl?

YES!!! We want to know and also we want to do a gender reveal for our families. We want to know before the party but of course it would be a surprise for them. My parents wanted to be surprised with me and then they fought over the names and my dad ended up spelling stuff wrong.

Would you share your top names with people while expecting?

Yes I don't see why you wouldn't. Some of the best gifts I have given people or even seen given have been monogrammed or have the baby's name on it already and I would hate to miss out on that stuff. Also like PP H and I already refer to our unconcieved child by name.

  • **New Questions**

Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl? We probably would, at least for the first, but maybe not for the second. To be honest, I REALLY want one of each so I'd hate to (for example) have a girl and then find out I was having another girl and be disappointed my whole pregnancy. I'm sure this is ridiculous, but these are the things I worry about.

Would you share your top names with people while expecting? Yes! I've actually shared them with a few close people now. Luckily none of my close friends are planning on using the same names :)

  • ****New Questions***

Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl? Yes. The suspense would kill me.

Would you share your top names with people while expecting? Yes. I want to be able to give the baby a name so it isn't referred to as "it" (this goes with the first question!) or "baby." I may not do it right away though. But I definitly want to give the baby a name as soon as possible.

  • What are your top three baby boy names? Raine William, Malachi Dean, Cyrus Alan

What are your top three baby girl names? Raine Elizabeth or Raine Manery, Helena Nadine, Gabriela Margarite.

Are you planning on using any family names? Raine, Helen, William, Elizabeth, Manery, Nadine, Rita (Margarite) , Dean and Alan are all H`s or my family names...Especially in the middle name spot I feel very strongly about using a name that is meaningful not just one thats pretty.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child? I don't google it, but I do look it up on the popularity charts. I would never name my kid a top 10 name as a first name. My BFF has 2 kids, both are top 1 or 2 names and already her 2 year old knows 8 other kids with his name or variations of his name.

Anything else you want to share about baby names? I have a ton of guilty pleasure names that are from my german or H's scottish background, but am not gutsy enough to use them because we are both mutts so its not obvious and we are not connected to our roots enough for such a cultural name. (My FAVE german names name right now are Brigetta and Mareike..) The only names I have run past H and he likes are the Raine combinations.

Advice on Michael: Personally I would use it as a middle name if its a name you always wanted to us. I wouldn`t use it as a first name mostly because I feel it comes across very egotistical to name a child after its parent (true or not...this is how I and others may percieve it unless you give this explination EVERY single time you meet someone new) and I hate the jr. tagged on.

My Nephew is the same name as his dad/my brother, and my brother hates it (ex-gf picked the name). The baby goes by either "the baby" or his initials "DJ" because its awkward to have the 2 of them living in the same house, and my whole family hates the "big dave, little dave" that reletives and other people seem to like.

  • Will you find out if you're having a boy/girl?

Yes. I am a planner and totally will want to nest and decorate a room for them before heading to the hospital...

Would you share your top names with people while expecting?

Yes. We will for sure use one of the Raine combos for a first child, and everyone close to me has known that I want to use it since I was about 12...It was to be my middle name if I wasn't adopted, and my favorite musician is a male Raine. But we also plan to adopt, so depending on which adoption route we take....leaning towards older child, they would already have a name, so I wouldn't plan a name for them unless they approached me about wanting us to give them a name (some kids do because they want a more "culturally appropriate name" or they just want to feel more a part of your family...but usually then you would just give them a middle name or add a second middle name, not change thier first name).

  • What are your top three baby boy names? The son that I am pregnant with now will be Theodore William (Teddy). If we have another boy, his name will be Henry William.

What are your top three baby girl names? Courtney Noelle is my top girl name.

Are you planning on using any family names? H's grandfathers' names were Theodore and William. My grandfathers' names are/were Henrico and William. Henrico is very Italian and I can't see naming our son that so we Americanized it a bit and turned it into Henry. We decided to go with Theodore William first because we found out we were pregnant a week before H's grandfather died and my original due date was on his birthday. It just seemed fitting.

Courtney is also a family name. Noelle isn't. I just like it ;)

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child? No not really. I mean I did google the names but just to see what came up. If my close friend had a baby close to mine with the same name, I would probably change my pick.

As far as advice to you on Michael - If that's what you want, DO IT. Seriously. Don't listen to anyone but your H. It's your baby - not your MIL's. My mother HATES Theodore or Teddy. Hates it with a passion and she lets me know it all of the time. It's important to H that our first born be Teddy so that makes it important to me. There will always be someone who has something negative to say about anything that you do - especially while you're pregnant. I'm not sure what it is but people feel like they can say anything to a pregnant woman.

  • This is so fun!

I always wanted names from the Bible, so this makes boys names easy, and girls names very difficult.

Top three boys names:  Isaiah, Braham (from Abraham), and Elijah (the third one always changes, though my sister has already called dibs on Ezekiel with a nickname Zeke *snap!*)

Top three girls names: Jerra, Miah (you see what I did there? lol), Grace, although I always loved the name Rebekah, til I convinced my parents to use it as my sister's middle name and they spelled it with c's...grrr!

I have no intentions of using family names at all. We don't have any attractive family names on my side, and I might be too eager to drop the family name of Nicholas or Steven on H's side :-/  I REALLY don't like common names, I've grown to love my unique name and I want the same for my kids. If I had to have a "Nick" I would go with Nicodemus.

I am less likely to use a name that I've seen before, especially on Google because I really want it to be different. I do find inspiration in names from the Bible- but that is tricky because not only does it need to be an attractive name, but it also needs to represent something positive. Like I would never name my kid Jezebel, no matter how pretty it might sound. :-)

  • What are your top three baby boy names? We don't have 3, heck we can't even pick one that we agree on.   Contenders at the moment are:   Nicholas, Timothy or Joseph, we don't know.  The middle name will be William.  That's all we do agree on

What are your top three baby girl names?  We have a few girl names we like:

    Claire Evelyn

    Addison Rose

    Cecelia Ann

Are you planning on using any family names?  H's name is Michael, but what his mother was thinking I have no idea.  (most of you remember she is batsh!t crazy).  Our last name is Cox.  Go ahead- say it  Mike Cox.   I will forgive you for giggling/laughing.   His father and Grandad were William.  We will use it for a middle name and it's H's middle name.  However they were called Billy or Will.  Again slap that last name on there and what were they thinking.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?  I don't really like trendy names, in fact I often check Social Security website to see what the popular names are and try to avoid them.

Anything else you want to share about baby names?  One thing that drives me nuts if people who take a common/regular name and try to give it some crazy spelling.  Then get pissy when it's pronounced wrong.  Working NICU we used to get some humdingers in there, so many in fact we kept a running list of things to never name your child.

  • What are your top three baby boy names?

Parker Timothy, Hunter Michael, Tucker Louis.

What are your top three baby girl names?

Stella Irene, Nora Rose, Rose Victoria

Are you planning on using any family names?

In each name is at least one name from either of our families. Timothy is H's name, Michael is my dads and brothers name, Louis was my grandpa's name, Stella was my great grandmother, Irene is my grandma, Rose is my other great grandma's name and Victoria is H's aunts name.

When you think of a baby name, do you google or try and think about who else (friends, celebs, etc.) have named their baby that name? Would that effect your choice when naming your child?

I don't necessarily Google the name but if I knew someone with that name and it brought a bad image to mind then I wouldn't use it. I really like the name Lucas but that was the last name of my ex-boyfriend before H and I think it would be weird to name a son Lucas because of that.

Will you find out if you are having a boy/girl?

Yes and I would absolutely love to have a gender reveal party so the whole family can find out at the same time!

Will you tell people your top baby name choices while pregnant?

I think I would want to keep the name a secret until the baby is born. Not everything about a pregnancy needs to be shared so it might be nice to just have H and I know.
