domestic type question

My aunt crocheted an afghan style blanket for the kid and gave it to me at my baby shower.  I've avoided using it until now because we just started using a blanket for him recently.  However, it REEKS of cigarette smoke.  What would be the best way to wash it?  I was thinking on the handwash setting of my washing machine with Woolite and air dry.

  • Sounds good to me!

  • If the blanket isn't huge, you can also put it in one of the larger garment washing machine bags.  That would help it from getting snagged on anything.  But I have a croqueted blanket my aunt made for my DD and she told me just to put in on cold in the gentle cycle.

  • I wash Brooks as needed, on delicate, but use our normal detergent. We make it, so it's probably different. Plus we have a front loader. But I've washed it probably 20 times and it's fine.

  • Any that smelt of smoke I got rid of. Because I'm a terrible person.
  • I think the gentle cycle with Woolite you should be okay and obviously let it air dry.

Maybe hang it outside first if you can to air it out before you wash it to cut down on the smokey smell.

  • I washed all of DD's crocheted blankets with cold water on the gentle cycle. I dried them flat on those mesh thingys. No issues!

My mom even recently washed stuff that was mine as a baby and it was fine.
