Whose Mother-in-Law is it anyways?

So I was having lunch with my family today and this question came up and since I'm the first in my family to get married we had no idea how to answer this. So we know that my husband's mom is my MIL and the our siblings were each other's sister/brother-in-law but the question that came up was is my MIL also my brother ans sisters MIL? Also when my brother and sister and sister-in-law get married what about their MILs? We just have know idea what the protocol is. Sorry if this seems confusing!

Thanks! :)

Re: Whose Mother-in-Law is it anyways?

  • No...your MIL is not your siblings MIL, just  happens to be the mother of the man thier sister married. However....at least in my moms family...the "in-laws" include everyone who has married in...so dad does consider my aunts husband to be his "brother in-law"...even though technically he is probably only my mom's BIL...since both he and my dad married in.

  • Your spouse's parents and siblings (and siblings' spouses) are your in-laws. Your parents and siblings (and siblings' spouses) are your spouse's in-laws. Your siblings are not in-laws to your in-laws, they are just your siblings. And vice-versa.

In other words, say your DH has 1 sibling (A), who is married. Say you have 1 sibling (C), who is married. A and C have no relation to each other- they have their own in-laws which you are not related to. A and spouse have no relation to your parents, and C and spouse have no relation to your DH's parents. (Unless both families choose to call them relations, of course, but technically they aren't.)

  • Thanks! I figured it wouldn't but I guess different families do what works for them. Glad that your family gets along that well!

  • The man that my sister married is now my brother-in-law. However, his family are of no relation to me and they are not my in-laws.

They may be very nice people, but they are not family to me. My husband's family do not consider my sister to be their family or in-law either.

  • No she is not  their MIL.  In addition, your BIL and SIL are not in laws to your siblings.  If someone asks their relation to them, they simply say " He/she is my sister's brother in law."
