So, after a bunch of plumbing and heating companies taking a look, the consensus is that the boiler is toast and needs to be replaced. There's a large section that's rusted out and it's probably been leaking very small amounts for a long time now, and it's just now getting to the point that it's making a puddle on the floor.
The best quote we got was actually from our oil company. They were super overpriced on the oil tank replacement, but beat everyone else on the boiler. Their price and installation was reasonable and DH negotiated to get a refund for the expensive service plan we bought this year. They are also going to add a 3rd heating zone for our constantly-cold kitchen (which was an addition to the original house) for half the price if we do it all at the same time.
Total is just under $5k with the extra work. They agreed to finance us, so we pay approx 1/3 down and make payments for the next 12 months at 0%. We are also going to get a $775 rebate from Burnham because of the known issues with our model of boiler, so we'll use that money to make the payments on the loan while I'm out on maternity leave. We're really happy with how the whole thing turned out. It's a lot of money, but in the end it's half of what the initial guess was AND we can pay for it slowly so our savings won't take as big of a hit.
