Family Drama

I was talking to my mom tonight and she informed me that my cousin's ex-girlfriend had a baby and didn't tell anyone!  He's 19 and lives with my grandfather.  My mom doesn't have a good realtionship with his mom so I haven't seen him in years.  The real drama here is that my mom wants to tell my grandfather and my aunt (not my cousin's mom, my mom's other sister) does not.  They are fighting about it.  My mom thinks g-pa deserves to know bc he is supporting cousin and aunt thinks it's not my mom's secret to tell.

My loyalty (and my mom's as well) is to my g-pa.  I don't think my mom owes to my cousin to keep his secret.

What do you guys think?

Re: Family Drama

  • Is there a concern that your grandfather is unwittingly supporting the baby by supporting your cousin?
  • Is the kid definitely his? I'd get some paternity testing before starting a big fuss!

Yes, my mom's concern has always been that my grandfather is being taken advantage of.  My cousin lived there for a year and a half before he got a job and my grandfather's ex-wife lives in his house too.  I have no earthly idea why he supports them and quite honestly he would probably support the baby if he knew about it, I just think he has the right to know.

You know I don't know, I don't even know how recent this all is.  My mom has known for at least a couple weeks and she just told me tonight.  Apparently my aunt (of the time to start trying for #2 reminder) found out via a parent at her school during a parent teacher conference.  The parent didn't realize my aunt didn't know.

  • Then I would say tell him.  After a paternity test!

I totally think he deserves to know, but would letting him know force him to support the baby- because he's a nice person and just would? Like, if he didn't know it wouldn't cost him $$..but if he knows, it will be another expense?

That sounds weird the way I said it- but KWIM?

No I get it...but it's his great-grandchild...his first great grandchild...I think if he did know about the baby and did decide to support it he wouldn't see it as a burden.

IDK I'm going to pretend the baby isn't really his...that way my kids can be the first great-grandchildren.
