Need advice on toddler constipation

Ugh I know it is tmi but A is going through a phase where she fears bowel movements and is having issues going. I have tried all the dietary advice from her ped and even a toddler laxative now but she is still in the vicious cycle of freaking out when she thinks she has to go , it takes her days, then she is ok and it starts again. Any advice? I am calling again but I was hoping for some mom insight.

Re: Need advice on toddler constipation

  • My oldest has had constipation issues since she was 9 months old and she's now 3.  She went through a phase like you described.  She now gets a daily dose of miralax.  It makes a world of difference but it's something she has to take consistantly (not just when she has a problem) to keep it working.  We also keep away from all the constipating food (white flour, bananas, white potatoes).  it may take a little while after you start something like miralax to see a difference.

  • We had major issues when DD was younger.  She used to be on a regular dose of Miralax as well, but we only use it as needed now. I've found the fiber gummies to be a great alternative, and I like it better than giving "medication."

  • What is the amount of Miralax to give a three year old?

you might have to play around with the dose and how often you give it. DD is 3 1/2 and gets a half a dose(half a capful) every morning.  If I see things getting too soft I don't give it to her for a day or 2.

It really depends, but I'd start with half a cap to see how that works.

  • We used Miralax for a few weeks for B.  it helped...even made then too mushy.  We abandoned that about 2 weeks ago and she's been fine since.  We cut back her cheese and dairy which helped a lot!

  • We go through this with Faith here and there still! The only thing that works is having her drink plenty of water, laying off the cheese and binding foods, and she gets Miralax 2x's a day for about 3 days(usually that's how long it takes to really work). And then just monitor her food intake!but usually I try prunes and prune juice before miralax along with plenty of water!
