Pregnancy & Applying for Jobs

I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant, and need to find a new position for after the baby is born.  Is there a time frame where it becomes unacceptable to apply for positions knowing you won't be available to take it immediately? I also know that the holidays delay a lot of hiring or starting time periods. My primary field is accounting and that also has me concerned that I'm better off applying now, knowing that with tax season approaching most positions don't get busy until late January or February.

I'm currently employed but my hours were reduced and I used my pregnancy as a time period for the hope that I would be able to return to my regular hours, but that hasn't happened, and I realize that we do not want the reduction of income with the added expense of a child.

Any advice?

  • I'm not sure where that line is, but I do think that 35 weeks is past it.

I don't think I'd bother applying for jobs now.  I wouldn't start applying until you feel confident that you could start work within 3 weeks and could work through your probation period (60-90 days) without taking extensive time off.

  • I actually think you should start networking with people now. I wouldn't go on an interview and I wouldn't mention the baby... I would just start the conversations now.  Tell them you are financially incentivized to stay at your current employer till X date but after that you're willing to move and that you want to start the conversations early to find the right job.

I'm in the recruiting industry and I see this sort of thing all the time plus I started talking to my current employer almost 1 year before I took the job.

    Best of luck.
