Marketing people come in

Thanks to the economy, for the past 3 years, I have been working in retail. I finally scored an interim position as a Marketing Associate with a company in my town (she went on maternity leave). My internship in college was marketing and promotions-oriented.

This marketing position is up in January and they've flat out told me that they don't have the funds to create a position for me.

A lot of positions in this area (Allentown, PA) require more than a year of experience. Is there anything I should be doing to market myself better?

Re: Marketing people come in

  • So, how long are you in that position while the other lady is on maternity leave? 6 weeks?

That is progress, right? That is something you can add to your resume, indeed. As far as trying to find more work in Marketing, perhaps you should create a Linkedin account, if you haven't already, and start networking.

Perhaps, you could do volunteer Marketing tasks for non profits to add to your resume. Maybe you could take a non credit class to sharpen your knowledge of Marketing.

    Just some suggestions.

  • Agree with PP - it's important to not lose touch with the field you're interested in. I'm a graphic designer and when I got out of school I worked for Jimmy Johns, I worked at a bank, worked as a nanny etc....but I was always doing freelance on the side AND I volunteered at an art museum in my spare time. I'm positive that is why a year later I was able to land a position in my field.

Make sure you are always keeping up on trends within your industry so in interviews you're able to have compelling conversations and let them know you're relevant to the here and now.

  • Just keep one thing in mind that whether you are on higher position or lower position; always try to grab more knowledge and experience with the changing trends because being in marketing field multitasking is very important and you can prepare your CV in that manner.
  • I'm not in marketing, but I'm in media and there's a little overlap.

I was having problems getting started a few years ago, so I took some time to evaluate what my weaknesses were. And then I found an unpaid internship that would help me work on those skills.

The internship I found was telecommuting, and it was only 10-15 hours that I could do whenever, so I was able to do it when I got home from work. I got valuable connections and recommendations, and I gained a lot of skills that helped me get an actual job.

It might not be something everyone can do, but I would  recommend trying to get something like that in to build your resume. It will make you seem like a go getter.

    Please pass the ice cream.
  • Also, this is probably crazy, but look for jobs in places that other qualified people might not be looking.

I've gotten one awesome permanent job through a temp service, and I found another really awesome job on CraigsList. Places like that require A LOT of sifting through crap jobs, but there are some gems out there, and most qualified people aren't finding the gems.

    Please pass the ice cream.
  • Thanks for all the advice, this is just what I needed to hear. I'm constantly freelance writing and have a lot of work printed now.

How do you find a telecommuting marketing job? That sounds awesome!

  • I found my telecommuting internship on JournalismJobs.com. It's definitely not the typical job you'll find on there, but they do exist.
