Best train set for toddlers?

Wes loves trains, and I want to get him a nice set for Xmas, but I'm struggling with the choices! Do any of you have one that you love? I don't want to end up with a million different ones because I can't make a decision.

Re: Best train set for toddlers?

  • We have a Thomas take and play set (I think that's what it's called).

Here are the things I like about it:

    • It folds up for storage!
    • you can buy other sets and they connect together

Here's what I don't like.  Because it folds up it's not very sturdy if a kid leans on it.  This isn't a problem for my 3 year old but the 2 year old has collapsed it several times.

  • we got a couple of the IKEA sets. They were way cheap and decent quality.  But we were not sure how much EJ would use it, so a low cost was better for us.
  • Is the Thomas one a battery operated set?

I had the Ikea ones in my hand last week, but then I hesitated because it's such a pain for me to return stuff there if I change my mind! I should've just bought them. He was playing with a similar set at the dentist's office yesterday, but I think they were Circo.

No, there's no batteries. At least not the set we have.

  • Also the IKEA set fits together with other train sets of the same style. Which was another reason why we felt it was a good starter set.
  •          Adam has all Thomas Wooden Railways. My Dad started it for him early. it is nice. it is expensive. He is thrilled with the new chuggington stuff, but other than a couple trains we are NOT starting a new set.  They do Make a few like 3 Thomas trians that take batteries and move and they are impressive with their ability to climb hills and pull loads.

The good thing about the wooden things are that they all work together- thomas, chuggington, imaginarium, ikea, brio- all fit together. so you can go  "cheap" and accent with say Thomas stuff.

My cousin switched her son from wooden to TrackMaster Thomas. They are the ones with the batteries and some have remotes. Fun because the move, way way less expensive, but they take batteries and they are kinda loud!

Take and play or Takealong Thomas is smaller flod up sets. smaller trains. not so much involved. we have one small set that was great to actually TAKE with us to use in restaurants and stuff it fit perfect in his place spot and kept him busy. he doesnt really use them now.

  • I saw a wooden train set at Gabe's last night for around $30. It looked pretty nice from what I could tell.

I think I also saw a wooden train set in the Aldi's ad for next week. (If I'm remembering my ads correctly.)

  • I just saw some train sets on zulilly today.

Just wanted to say thanks, Val! I picked up the one at Aldi's for $19 and it's a pretty nice set. It seems to be compatible with the wooden Thomas trains too.
