San Jose CA, anyone?

Hi all,

I'm going to San Jose the last week of November for a week on business (Whoot!) I'll arrive on late on Saturday 24th and have all day Sunday to myself. Any suggestions for what to do? I saw the Winchester mansion online. Is it good? And where are the best shops for kids clothes?

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks in advance :)

Liam - Sounds like "Leem" The Irish form of William. William means "Will, Desire" and " Helmet, Protection"
Eimhin - Sounds like "Heaven". From the Irish word Eimh, "Swift, Ready". This name is particularly associated with St. Evin, a bishop who gave his name to the monastery he founded at Monasterevan in Ireland. It is also anglicized as Evan.
Fionn! Another name to confuse you Americans!! It is pronounced f-yun...like fun with a y in it. Fionn was a mythical hunter-warrior of Irish mythology.

Re: San Jose CA, anyone?

  • The Winchester house is interesting, it's touristy and kind of overpriced, but still fun. You can only see it via tours. It's actually within about a block of two main shopping areas. Santana Row is a nice outdoor area (more upscale shops) and across from that is a HUGE mall (Valley Fair) with just about every chain store you can think of.

Are you a tech person? People say the tech museum is neat, and it's fun to visit Apple headquarters. Just about any tech company you can think of is in SJ if you're interested in that. But honestly, if I had a free day in San Jose, I would want to leave! It's not really a good vacation town.

I'm biased because it's where I live, but I strongly advise you to go to Santa Cruz. It's only 1/2 hour from SJ. We have beautiful redwood forests (Henry Cowell State Park), rocky coastlines (West Cliff Drive), beaches (Seabright), quaint downtown shopping areas (Pacific Avenue and Capitola village) and even an old wooden roller coaster (SC Beach Boardwalk). Plus in the surfing museum you can see a surfboard that has teeth marks in it from a great white shark :) The drive over HWY 17 to SC can be a little scary (it's curvy and people drive fast) but if you're expecting it you'll be fine.

Or, you could drive up to San Francisco. It's about an hour from SJ and fall is a great time of year there. It's usually beautiful and clear. You could take a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy the views (just dress warm!).

  • Although I agree that San Jose is not a big touristy town (living there going on 31 years now) it still can fulfill what you're looking for especially if you only have a day.  Personally I wouldn't recommend Santa Cruz for the time you're going.  I've always found it to be too cold and windy no matter what month of the year it is.  If you're looking to do shopping for your kids there are tons of places you can go.  Santana Row is nice but pricey and doesn't really have much in terms of kid's clothes.  Valley Fair is awesome, it's where I do a ton of my shopping for my kids.  If you want to drive a bit you can go to the Gilroy Outlets (about 45 min. south of SJ) or even to the Great Mall (outlet) in Milpitas (the town next over.)  There are several other malls in the area but those three I would recommend over the other ones. If you do want to go to SF to do shopping there be forewarned that you'll be dealing with mall-type shops as well as a lot of walking around outside to get from one store to another.  Weather there is tempermental so you'll have to layer up to stay warm.

If you're looking to do a mix of shopping and attractions I highly recommend the Tech Museum.  Maybe I'm just biased since I worked there for several years but it's a very interactive-based museum and if you're into learning how things work you may like it.  They have galleries based on biotechnology, underwater exploration, and good 'ol computer-based technology.  They also have an IMAX theater that's pretty awesome as long as you don't get motion sickness.  Across from the museum is Cesar Chavez Park where during this season they have their annual Christmas in the Park.  You can get some hot chocolate and walk around all the holiday displays they have.  Also on the other side of the park is the San Jose Museum of Art. Right behind it is St. Joseph's Cathedral.  Very beautiful church.

  • Thanks girls. I appreciate the responses. I am very techy so the museum sounds great as does Valley Fair and Gilroy. I'll see what I can squeeze in. Thanks a mill. I'm all excited now! Big Smile
