Dummy questions related to politics...

I picked up a form to change my voting place. When I fill it out, I'm contemplating on changing my party from republican to independent. I guess my main reason for doing so is because I feel like I fall right in the middle of the majority of the issues that come from both the democratic and republican sides. Is this a dumb move? If I do this, that just means I don't really affiliate with one party over another, right? Will this mess with any voting issues?

Like I said, dummy questions, but the board is slow, I'm not a political genius (far from it, actually), and reassurance is always nice. TIA!

  • You wouldn't really get to vote in any primaries, that's about it as far as I know.

This is correct.  Since Oklahoma is a closed primary state, you can only vote in primaries for your own party. Since there isn't likely to be a third/independent party primary here, you wouldn't get to vote then (such as Super Tuesday when we were voting to decide who the republican nominee would be). You would still be eligible to vote at any general election (like this week).

On a related note, I wonder if you would get more (evangelizing) or less (not on anyone's registered-republican or democrat list) robo calls encouraging you to vote for x or y.

  • I'm registered independent, but I am going to change this at some point. I'm tired of not being able to vote in primaries.

  • I'm registered independent, and didn't get one robo call this election season. It does suck not being able to vote in the primaries, though. I just can't bring myself to register with either party.

This is why I'm still registered independent...
