OMG ... am I crazy for booking my vacay for 2014 now??
DH and I are off on the exotic Western Carribean in May 2013 via Carnival and I just found a cruise itinerary that I want to do sooo bad in 2014. It is on the NCL Jade in/out of Rome with stops in Turkey, Cyprus, Israel two ports and Eygpt 2 ports. Would you book it or wait??? Price is not bad and I have had great luck with Cruisesonly.com honoring if the prices drop.
Help!!
Kim
Re: OMG ... am I crazy for booking my vacay for 2014 now??
I can't imagine booking something that far in advance! Our lives are just too chaotic. I am back in school. I don't know if better job opportunities could come along. Pregnancy (or children even!) could happen between now and 2014.
I definitely wouldn't book now unless it was completely refundable, but that's just me. We plan long weekend getaways in as little as a few days beforehand. We have never booked anything for a vacay more than about 6 months in advance.
Personally, I'd wait. Do you see where half of your ports are? Israel and Egypt. In case you haven't been following the news recently, Israel is currently having some pretty big issues with Gaza, and as you know last year there were significant uprisings all along northern Africa, including in Egypt.
My point: those are hardly regions of the world that I would consider "stable" right now, but they comprise more than half of your cruise itinerary. Depending on how things play out there, it's entirely possible that one or more ports would be cancelled / substituted / removed. If you're paying for the cruise because those ports interest you, then don't you want to wait until it's closer to make sure those regions are stable and cruise ships are still visiting?
I remember that I got some very untimely marketing materials from a cruise line in the mail last summer - advertising their newest port of call (Tripoli, Libya) while said port-of-call was currently plagued by constant gun fights. Imagine if you'd booked onto that cruise? You'd be disappointed because you were looking forward to that port and could no longer visit it.
I'd just wait until it got closer to make sure those regions were still stable and likely to be places that companies feel safe enough docking in. Obviously, things can change in a second so you can never be guaranteed, but just given the flare up in Israel this week I'd want to wait.
