Spouse Working Opposite Hours

Hi Guys,

this is my first time posting on these boards, so I hope I'm in the right place. I was just looking for a bit of advice.

Currently I work from home and have some flexibility in my hours although I do try to keep semi-normal business hours sometime between around 7am-5pm. My husband has been working first shift at his job which is from 6:30am-4pm and we just found out today that they will be switching him to another shift from 4pm-1:30am in about a week.

We've never had to work such opposite hours, and I guess I'm just looking for advice on how others have made this sort of thing work, like with meals, sleep, etc. I'm also a little worried about waking him up while I'm on calls with clients, or just cleaning up around the house.

Thanks so much for your advice!

Re: Spouse Working Opposite Hours

  • That's really tough with you working from home!

The best thing you can do is plan out entire weeks. It looks like normal lunch time will sort of be more like his breakfast time, but you would be able to eat at least that meal with him.

My DH and I work pretty opposite schedules but we try to eat at least one meal together a day (usually lunch).

  • Thanks, that's a good idea about planning out the week in advance. Maybe I'll look into some brunch-type meals so that I can have lunch and he can essentially eat breakfast at the same time. I guess it's the start of another adventure around here. :)

    Thanks again!

  • DH and I have almost always worked opposite hours (he's a chef and I work in insurance). It can work and does make you appreciate both your alone time and the time you have together.

You'll cherish the days you both have off. We make sure we make time for each other on these days (usually once a week) instead of going off and doing our own thing (even if we are both just home).

I like the brunch idea, have lunch daily together if schedules allow.

When I work at home and have meetings, I go into our office and shut the door so DH and my dogs know to leave me alone.  It's weird but I can be home all day and so busy with work that I don't even talk to DH much all day.

  • We've gone through periods like this. I think the best way to handle it is to really make the most of your time together. Plan meals, and dates when you can. Absence makes the heart grow fonder!
  • My husband and I work different schedules...what keeps us sane is getting our sleep.  We used to try to get up or stay up late for each other but realized we were too tired to enjoy the time together.  so instead we make time on our off days.  as far as cleaning id plan that for later in the day when he is getting up and ready for work.  And we always eat together before he leaves.  Since you work from home maybe you can have a late start to your day every now and then and sleep in together :)
