Train/Hobby Stores?

My dad gave us a set of 1952 lionel trains for m, many of which i played with as a kid. I am setting them up around the christmas tree this year, but need a way smaller transformer since it will be a very small set up, my dad gave me one for a huge huge step up.

so anyone know a train shop? i want to deal with someone who knows what they are talking about since i don't want to blow out the engine which is my dad's childhood original.

Re: Train/Hobby Stores?

  • I think John knows of one locally, I just shot him an email.

In similar news there is a model railroad club here in Phoenixville and they have a HUGE set up every year around this time. It's free too.

  • While I'm sure there is probably one closer, there is one in Westmont, NJ that has been there since I was a kid (It's like 10/15 minutes or so across the Ben Franklin Bridge and you can stop and eat at one of the awesome Collingswood restaurants if you actually go there).  It is a little train/hobby store that has literally been there forever.  The contact info is below:

aww this place looks so cute.

  • Wow Letranger that is amazing!  My dad has a set that is probably just as old that he used to set up when we were kids. We used to love playing with it.  Amazing how well built they are and that they still work after all of these years. I know M will love them.

  • My dad is a big Lionel train enthusiast.  His store of choice is Nicholas Smith in Broomall.  http://www.nicholassmithtrains.com/store/

The Sattlers store in Haddon Twp is cute but I think it might be all HO scale, so don't know if that would help you.

Very cool, Emma is obsessed with my Dad's trains.  As soon as we get there she wants to go down and see the layout.  It makes him happy because my sister and I are long past getting excited for it.

A 1952 Lionel engine is worth some money, so I agree, worth getting the correct transformer.  Let me know if you ever have any questions, I could forward to my dad.  He's a Lionel geek and would be happy to talk your ear off about it.

Awesome to know! I will let you know if I have aspecific question.

My grandparents worked on the Lionel factory line in Newark hence why my dad even has them. Some of them have been added over time not all His originals.

Very cool.  I'll have to tell my dad.  He's into all things Lionel.  He has a steam engine that he got when he was born (1952) that was made before he was born, it's like his prized posession...and apparently someday he has already decided to bequeath it to Emma.

I just noticed on Nicholas Smith's website they have a Charlie Brown Christmas Lionel box car.  That combines two of his favorite things...obviously going to be his christmas present. ;-)

I saw this too when I checked out the link you posted.  I literally texted DH and said we have to build the kid a Lionel train set.  I am thinking about buying the Peanuts car and putting it away for him.  We loved my dad's trains as a kid and it's a tradition I would love to start with our son.  Plus I love Snoopy and the kid will probably hate him thanks to me, so it's a win-win!
