Do you do dips/apps for Thanksgiving?
If so, what?
My family was never big on snacking. We pretty much starved ourselves on holidays up until dinner was ready (and it was always late)! However, my in-laws always have a million appetizers and dips out when they host things. Thanksgiving is our big holiday that we host -- I don't want to spoil dinner, or make a bunch of crap nobody will eat -- but I'm trying to decide if I should have a dish or two for people to pick at before dinner is ready.
Re: Do you do dips/apps for Thanksgiving?
We never really did growing up, unless you count celery with cream cheese.
However, we usually do now - whether it's just a veggie platter or some sort of bread and dip.
Sometimes I make Bloomin' Onion Bread. Mmmmmmm...
There's also a black bean & corn dip that my SIL's friend made one time for a party, and I love it so much that I take it for almost every occasion these days.
my mom always has that creamy spinach dip (with the Knorr packet) in a brown bread bowl. yummmm - it's one of the only times we have it during the year and it is always a big hit.
last year i brought homemade salsa and guac to my MIL's. totally random, but it was gone before dinner.

We typically just do the veggie tray, cheese and crackers and maybe a dip. This year however I asked my SIL to be "in charge" of appetizers. She was more than happy to take over the process. Her short list of appetizers sounds delish and since she's not prepping for the big meal she's totally happy to spend a lot of time getting the appetizers ready. What I'm trying to say is there someone who you can ask to take care of this for you?
I love apps/dips so yes!
last year was the first year we hosted thanksgiving and I think we had buffalo chicken dip, cheese and crackers, might have even had another cheese dip. We do something similar when we host Christmas Eve. When we go to others they don't have as much for snacks but usually something.
I normally have some trail mix made up, but that's sort of as far as I've taken it in previous years. My MIL is the app queen, but I've found that apps are hard to delegate b/c if the app person arrives later than everyone else then it's sort of a waste!
Growing up, the pre-dinner apps were always what we looked forward to, much more than dinner itself! Potato chips with onion dip and shrimp cocktail are the must-haves. When we have dinner at MILs without them I feel empty inside. Literally and figuratively.
Since we never ate dinner until 5pm, and would have guests over around 1pm, we always put out veggies and dip and cheese/crackers/salami.
So, I think it just depends on when you're eating and whne people are coming over! But don't go overboard!
