When to tell my new manager?

Hi Ladies,

I posted this on my BMB, but I thought this might be a good place too. I was just offered a new job, which I am going to take, but I am 7 weeks pregnant and I am just wondering when I should tell my manager. I am kind of thinking of telling him next week before I start just because I feel so guilty about not being upfront. Do you think that is the best thing to do or is it dangerous?

TIA!

Re: When to tell my new manager?

  • I would wait until you've settled into the job - I BELIEVE you're still in the stage of your pregnancy where things are pretty uncertain (miscarriage is a lot more likely), so if you wouldn't be telling family yet I see no reason to tell an employer.

Really you could get away with waiting until you start showing to tell, it's theoretically none of their business and shouldn't effect how you work.

  • Thanks very much for your reply! I feel like you are right. The more I talk to people the more they suggest I wait until I am further along so I think that is what I am going to do. Hopefully it doesn't damage the relationship with my manager and coworkers, but I do need to do what is right for me and my family in this situation I guess.

  • I wouldn't tell anyone until your well into your second trimester.  Check the benefits at your new job, some don't cover preexisting conditions (Pregnancy can fall into that).
