New to 9to5, but not happy about an open position I went for...

So, I have been at my company for a year and a half, and about 4 months ago, my Boss pulled me into his office, and basically told me that he wants me to start taking on more roles, and learning more of what a coordinator position does, because he wants me to step into that position if one ever comes available.

So I did just that, and once the position came open, I put in my request for it.  This was back in mid-September.  I have talked to my boss, and to HR about what is going on with it, because I have not heard a thing. I have now talked to them about 4-5 times since it became open, and as of this morning, I was told that there was an interview done a few weeks back, and I guess it is a friend of the president of the company.

I know its more "who you know" rather that "what you know" now, but still... UGH!!!

Anyone else have any advice as to what to do? I have told everyone that I am still very interested, and have been working my butt off for it, but I think it'll go to her, because of her friendship with the president.

  • I have gone through exactly what you are going through right now. My advice is to just keep on working hard and let your work speak for itself.

I one time was told a open position was mine and all I had to do way apply. Well after some time I inquired as to why I had not been contacted yet I was told that they were in the process of interviewing candidates. I finally got the chance to interview for the position but was told the day before that the hiring manager had pretty made up his mind to hire his neighbor. So I still interviewed and was told the next morning that the position went to someone else.

A few months later the position opened up again and I was given the job without have to go through the interview process.

  • Sadly that job will probably go to the president's friend.  It's not fair at all but it's life.  All you can do is work hard and keep your head up.

    Sorry that's happening.

    Thats what Im thinking...

but yes, I am really working harder right now, and trying to.. I guess... "prove myself" to them, that I could step into the position, and they wouldn't regret it... but I guess we will see what happens.

    Thanks ladies
