Random chatter

I don't really have a super topic-focused thing to share, so a random chat thread it is :)

What is everyone up to and how is the week going?

The students are CRAZY this week at school. This past weekend was a 3-day weekend so we only have 4 days of school this week and they get all next week off.

We have a potluck Thanksgiving "dinner" for lunch tomorrow at work. I'm kinda pumped. I love Thanksgiving foods.

Other than that it is quiet here. I have a herniated disc in my lower back and it's killing me tonight. It's right around my hip/leg joint so I get sciatic pain down my leg and I can barely walk. I wanted to wear a skirt tomorrow. I may be wearing my orange athletic sneakers with it. Not tacky, right? :P

I have tons of experience with this and now exactly how your feeling. I herniated a disc a few years back and ended up having to have surgery because of it (which still didn't help). The good news is that my situation isn't the norm, so hopefully yours will be able to fix itself. Anyway, just wanted you to know that I know your pain, and let me know if you have any questions about anything! I'd be happy to help :)

I do have a question. Is there anything you found that does help at all? My old chiro told me that once I found a job that didn't involve so much heavy lifting, I'd feel a lot better. Well I have a new job and I'm on my feet all day so it's getting worse again. Ice and heat feel good when it's on, but once I have to move the pain is back.

Did you see a chiropractor or a doctor?

  • Oh no that's terrible. I'm sorry your in pain. Do you use the Therma Care heat wraps for the back? They can be worn for 8 hours.

I am out of my meds for gerds. have been for a couple weeks now. My GI isn't refilling my prescription or giving me a lower does. I've called twice and talked to the assistant (thats what they call them instead of nurses or nurse practitioners) about it and left messages but no dice. I think I will have to go in and demand some because the longer I go without the worse I get.

We have an advent workshop at my Aunts church this Sunday. Eating cookies and making Christmas stuff is going to be fun.

We never got a week off for Thanksgiving. This must be a new thing. The schools around here are doing it too. I wish we got a 4 day week then a week off. That would have been great.

  • Sorry to hear about your back pain!  That's no fun...especially having to be on your feet all day or evening sitting for extended periods of time!

Erollis - Advent workshop sounds fun!  Cookies and Christmas stuff.  Two of my favorite things! :-)

As for me - It's cold here!  I'm sitting at work, and my hands are an icecube!!  I get to leave work in a couple of hours to go close on the house!  It is finally here.  I will officially be a homeowner!  We currently own the home we're living in, but it's just in DH's name since he's had it for about 5 years now.  I'm so excited that today is here!  We'll be moving on Saturday.

First think we'll need to do for the house is get a fence for the backyard.  We have two dogs, so we have to have the fence!  It'll stink taking them out on their leashes...especially since it's getting colder!  But this fence is becoming the death of me!  Before we can do anything, we have to get approval from the HOA.  No biggie...right?  Well, we have to submit a plot plan of our property...which we don't have!  The county recorder's office doesn't have one.  The county's surveyor's office doesn't have one.  The company that once did it doesn't have it anymore because it ws too long ago.  We didn't order a mortgage survey, because those are not accurate.  So, we're going to have to fork out the money and have our property professionally surveyed.  Ugh!

Ky - I was looking at your home blog last night, and I love your to do list.  I think once we get settled in, I'm going to make a to-do list of what I wantto do to the house to make it ours. That way I can be accountable for it!  By no means, will I write a blog (not creative enough for that!), but a to-do list will keep me going I think!  The house is definitely not a fix-it-up house, but make small changes here and there to make it ours.

I can't believe Thanksgiving is in 8 days.  It doesn't feel like it is time for Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping, or the Christmas season AT ALL.  This year has flown by.  It's crazy!

Wow - this got really long...lots of rambling.  Off to go finish some work for the next couple of hours ;-)

  • I'm loving the 4 day week! And I'm hoping to take next Monday off as well to make it another long weekend/short week.

Tomorrow my manager is taking the department out for lunch and then on Friday we have a good-bye lunch for a co-worker who was here on a temp assignment, so lots of eating to do. Otherwise things are pretty quiet. Work is slow right now and winter has arrived here, so I just want to hibernate in the evenings!

I see an orthopedic surgeon. I can tell you that being on your feet all day is NOT going to help it at all no matter what you do, and if you're not careful it may even make it worse...and then you'll end up in the hospital for 3 days (or at least that's what happened to me!) But, on the reverse, being sedentary all day isn't going to help it either! As of this very moment, I am only allowed to work on a part-time basis b/c I can't sit or stand for too long. I know that is impossible for you, so I'd suggest that you try to alternate between the two as much as possible through out the day then rest as much as possible when you get home. Another thing I would suggest is seeing if you can get your hands on a portable TENS unit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcutaneous_electrical_nerve_stimulation). It's this little machine that sends electronic pulses to the area of your pain and it essentially "tricks" your body into forgetting about it. Strange but true, and it really, really, really helps!

  • Sorry to those feeling under the weather.

I successfully dragged my heiny out of bed this morning and went back to bootcamp for the first time since our Nola trip, which was amazeballs by the way.

We're going to do duck gumbo for thanksgiving like we did last year which I am very excited about. AND I'm totally stoked for Christmas. I haven't been excited for it in 3 years because of work. This is my 4th one there and with my new position, while I will still be there for every service, it will be a bit less stressful. And my parents are coming to town too. So I'm all about looking at gifts and decorations and recipes right now.

  • QJ that's great to hear. It's crazy that Thanksgiving is practically a week away! And I would love to try duck gumbo.

How is everyone doing when it comes to Christmas shopping?

  • Back pain is no fun!  I had a protruding disc a few years ago.. physical therapy was amazing.  They put me in traction, which at first was a little unfomfortable, but then it was so relieving!  Maybe look into that?

I also cannot believe Thanksgiving is next week!  We are spending it with my side of the fam this year (yay!).  And I love love love black friday!  My mom is already thinking we need to go out at 2am.. yikes!

athlete - I haven't updated that in so long!  And I do have things to post about - but I download my pics to my home computer & since I'm on the computer all day at work, I hardly get on my home computer to update!  But I do love to-do lists.  I'm always adding and/or making new ones.  Kind of puts things in perspective regarding cost, easiness, or what is most important to help figure out what to tackle first.  Good luck at your closing tomorrow - hope it goes smoothly!!

We decided to extend our disney vacation an extra day.  I did not realize you can change your flight reservations within 24 hours of booking for no charge!  So I took advantage of that!  And to save money, we are going to stay at a moderate resort for the first half, and a deluxe the second half.  Which as I've read - isn't that uncommon.  They transfer your luggage for free & its pretty easy!

Well, that's my random chatter.  Smile

TENS Units are awesome! I was going to a chiropractor for a few weeks, and they gave me a portable one to keep. When I used it last year (haven't used it since lol), it was awesome. Feels weird, but feels really nice as well. My back was hurting if I sat too long in one place.

So, I was totallly trying to cut out some of the quotes, but couldn't figure out how to get it to post!

  • Ky - 2am??  If my sister has anything to say, we'll be at Wal-mart at like 10pm. LOL.  We usually make it an all-night adventure :-/  Then I have to work that morning as well.  Ugh!

Also, that's super cool you're able to extend your Disney vacation a day!

As for Christmas shopping - I haven't even thought about it!  My mom asked me to be thinking about what I want for Christmas.  I haven't even thought about what to get people yet!

Guess I should get back to moving boxes to the new house....

Woah!  I think it's crazy stores are opening the night before.  Haha.  But also, I don't think I could handle being out all day.  Last year I think we did the 2am thing, and then came home to put up the tree, to find out that some of the lights (on a prelit tree) didn't work.  It ended up with me in tears & poor DH running to a few different stores trying to find a way to fix it.  Haha, I blame it on being so tired!  Sucks you have to work that morning!  Do you work retail?

I will look into that. Thank you! I'm trying to sit more at work. I'm debating sending a quick email out to my supervisors letting them know what's up so if they come in to observe me and find me sitting.Last night my back and down into my leg were so bad I could barely put pressure on my leg to walk. My new insurance cards finally came in so I'm hoping to find a doctor down here soon.

In happier news, I just talked to my mom on the phone about Thanksgiving plans. We're going to my sister's in North Carolina. I haven't seen my parents in 5 months and haven't seen my niece in close to a year (Thanksgiving is her 4th birthday). I'm so excited to go!

  • Ky - I kind of work in retail. I work at a distribution center for a retail company in Brownsburg as the HR Coordinator. So, the distribution center doesn't get Black Friday off (but the Corporate office in Seattle does! Not fair!) I have never had Black Friday off :-(  All throughout high school, I worked in a restaurant.  Ugh!

Dee - that is sooo exciting that you get to see your parents and niece!  I couldn't go without seeing my family for that long, or DH's parents for that fact.  I think we see DH's parents more than my own parents Sad, but that's because they live down by us.  I don't know how some of you all do that!  Kudos for you!
