Maybe I'm dumb...

but can someone PLEASE tell me what the extramarital affairs of a military official have to do with anything that should be national news... Did I miss something? I mean great googly moogly! Military men are notorious for being cheating turds...Maybe I'm just ranting because I'm tired of hearing it! What's your take on it? (As a confession... I will not confirm or deny that I may or may not be procrastinating a psychology paper in order to discuss this... Embarrassed)

  • http://gma.yahoo.com/petraeus-affair-military-prosecute-adulterers-103804132.html This is the first one I could find. Apparently there is some controversy based on the Benghazi raid... but I'm having trouble linking the raid in Libya to the whole cheating scandal. Am I nuts, or missing something?

  • I don't care about his personal life. I'm not sure why anyone else does, either.

  • Multiple things:

    a. The CIA Director having an extramarital affairs opens up a potential blackmail situation which could compromise national security

    b. The mistress gave a speech and made certain comments that made it seem as if she had been given classified information that she should not have been privvy too - also compromising national security

    c. Classified documents were found on her laptop that were given to her by him - also compromising national security.

It isn't about his personal life. It is about what has he told her or what information has he given her that she should not have been given.  See B above.

  • Some people are up in arms because they think Petraeus resigning would keep him from testifying about the CF that went down in Benghazi. It won't. It would take longer to get him in but he can easily be compelled to testify as a private citizen. That's what his affair and resignation have to do with Benghazi.

Exactly this. The ability to be blackmailed is adverse information making you ineligible for a security clearance (as is intentional disregard for protection of classified information, which also amounts to treason).

    Also ditto Runnergirl.

Alsoalso, this story is a whole bag of crazy. General has affair with biographer who sends threatening emails to party planner who she sees as a threat for generals affection. Party planner asks FBI friend (who shes had some involvement with?) to start investigation which reveals her inappropriate relationship with another general. Both generals are close enough to be a witness for her sisters custody case. FBI agent gets removed from the case after people learn he sent shirtless picture texts to the party planner too. Yeah, that's quite the web of ridiculousness that people want to read about and therefore newsworthy.

Agree with all of this. It's so absurd, and so a lot of people are starting to wonder A) What else is being covered up, and B) Where all this is going to end.

I kind of love it too, but it's slightly unsettling that these are the people running the "intelligence" sector of our military/government. I honestly don't give two sh*ts who sleeps with whom, but the overall inability to be discreet and avoid this whole circus kind of blows my mind. I know military/political leaders/men in power in general are notorious for this sort of thing, but I guess I find this level of unprofessionalism amazing. Given the things the FBI/CIA regularly pull off that none of us ever know about, this whole thing is kind of funny (funny-perplexing, not funny-haha).

  • After some more reading, I did finally come to an article that actually discussed that issue of national security... but Holy Moses this thing is one giant charlie foxtrot!! (That's the military slang for cluster f&^$!) You'd think that as the head of the CIA, the man could either a)figure out how to cover up his affair, or b) figure out how to get out of said affair with all his "documents." It's just plain laziness! And insanity!
