Hello everyone! Since it has been pretty slow around here lately I figured I would start a GTKY thread about cruising. So here it goes:
1. How many cruises have you been on?
2. Favorite cruise and why?
3. Least favorite cruise and why?
4. Favorite port?
5. Least favorite port?
6. Any upcoming cruises booked?
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at?
8. Favorite cruiseline?
9. Least favorite cruiseline?
10. How far in advance do you usually book?
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise?
Re: Calling all cruisers!
1. How many cruisers have you been on? 4 completed
2. Favorite cruise and why? Carnival Destiny to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, & Nassau-- beaches at Grand Turk and Half Moon were great
3. Least favorite cruise and why? NCL Sky to Bahamas- not a fan of the freestyle
4. Favorite port? Half Moon Cay
5. Least favorite port? Freeport, Bahamas
6. Any upcoming cruises booked? Oasis of the Seas- Eastern Caribbean in June 2013
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at? Possibly the Carnival Liberty to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, St. Thomas, and San Juan for March 2014
8. Favorite cruiseline? So far, Carnival but I have only tried NCL and Carnival... I'm sure I will LOVE RCL
9. Least favorite cruiseline? NCL
10. How far in advance do you usually book? Depends, booked the Oasis 15 months out because the prices were decent for the summer. They have been going up & up since. We have booked 6 weeks out for a 3 nighter to Bahamas.
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise? Months in advance I usually make sure I am working out/ staying in shape so I am happy in my bathing suit. I also do some shopping for clothing for formal night and shorts/ tanks. Besides that, I am always on cruisecritic looking for tips and reviews!
My answers are pretty lame, sorry!
1. How many cruises have you been on? 3
2. Favorite cruise and why? Mediterranean. I love Europe and being able to sail over there and visit places like Venice and Santorini was heaven!
3. Least favorite cruise and why? None
4. Favorite port? Venice, Italy
5. Least favorite port? The Mexican ones
6. Any upcoming cruises booked? No, probably not for another few years since we're doing an international trip in a few months
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at? Eventually I want to go to Alaska.
8. Favorite cruiseline? Disney.
9. Least favorite cruiseline? Carnival
10. How far in advance do you usually book? 6-12 months
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise? Check out the cruise's expeditions to compare with doing it on our own.
1. 9 traditional cruises (plus an expedition cruise and a ferry cruise)
2. 16-nt East Asia on Sapphire Princess. The variety of the ports, the balance of port and sea days, the ship, the passenger makeup... It was a great all around (except for the food on the ship, but the food in port made up for it)
3. 11-nt Canary Islands on Voyager of the Seas. The ports were okay, but Voyager is not a great ship for cool-weather cruising, and with the 50/50 split of English-speaking guests and Spaniards, it was sometimes hard to find things to do.
4. Favorite port is a tough one. I think for the combination of things to see, convenience from the ship, and unlikeliness of visiting on a land trip, I'll go with Nha Trang, Vietnam.
5. Least favorite port is probably Port Louis, Mauritius. I didn't love Mauritius and Port Louis is not a convenient home base for the island. Plus, the port facility isn't great and requires a long walk out to the taxi queue.
6. Nothing booked at the moment.
7. I'm always eyeing Black Sea cruises, since it's one area I haven't been.
8. I like Princess best of those I've sailed, but I think I might like Celebrity.
9. I really didn't like Costa.
10. I've booked the day the next season's sailing dates were published and I've booked 14 days before sailing. Usually around 3 months out, I guess?
11. Port research. For more obscure ports this can be quite a task. Now that Lonely Planet sells digital chapters I sometimes go that route so I can get just the city/region we're visiting.
1. How many cruises have you been on? 3
2. Favorite cruise and why? probably my honeymoon cruise which was 14 nights from copenhagen down to rome
3. Least favorite cruise and why? probably my last one to canada and new england. it rained the whole time, there were 2 hurricanes that collided up there and made for a very rough ride and princess was terrible that time around!
4. Favorite port? Hmmm...tough. It's a toss up between London and Rome!
5. Least favorite port? Wasn't that thrilled with lisbon portugal. I mean it was gorgeous to look at but our tour guide stunk and it was sorta boring there!
6. Any upcoming cruises booked? No none yet. We canceled our alaska tour last year and DH wanted to take a big cruise with the family for his masters graduation present but BIL wont budge!
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at? We would love to alaska, south america, panama canal....and i'd love to hit up europe again!
8. Favorite cruiseline? Ummm..only been on 2, carnival and princess. Neither are my favorite! Wanna try RCL really badly!
9. Least favorite cruiseline? Now, its Princess. they've had terrible service recently and its too old of a crowd for us!
10. How far in advance do you usually book? depends...sometimes 6 months, sometimes a year. it depends on the location and time of year!
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise? Oh...ummm. usually I plan the excursions, travel plans, any necessary beauty things!
At sea, heading to Lisbon, Portugal
1. How many cruises have you been on? 6
2. Favorite cruise and why? NCL Gem -- got engaged
3. Least favorite cruise and why? NCL Jewel -- cold & rained every day; it was so cold in snowed in Tampa FL as we were coming home. I know this wasn't NCL's fault but it was still my least favorite cruise
4. Favorite port? St. Thomas
5. Least favorite port? Roatan
6. Any upcoming cruises booked? no
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at? yes, waiting for DH to get confirmation of the time off & then we'll book, probably tomorrow.
8. Favorite cruiseline? NCL
9. Least favorite cruiseline? Carnival
10. How far in advance do you usually book? 2-3 months
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise? hang out on cruisecritic
Cancer sucks.
1. How many cruises have you been on? 3
2. Favorite cruise and why? Alaska Glacier tour
3. Least favorite cruise and why? I guess it would be a Mexico cruise, but it wasn't bad. It just wasn't as amazing as Hawaii and Alaska.
4. Favorite port? Whittier, AK
5. Least favorite port? Cozumel
6. Any upcoming cruises booked? No. :-(
7. Any cruises not booked but you are looking at? Maybe something in the Mediterranean. I always have my eye on world cruises as well.
8. Favorite cruiseline? So far it's Princess.
9. Least favorite cruiseline? Carnival
10. How far in advance do you usually book? Depends on the cruise. The last one we book last minute because we got a great deal.
11. What do you do (besides pack) to get ready for a cruise? Arrange care for our cats, but that's about it.
