What kind of dishwasher detergent do you use?

We always used those Cascade tabs at our old house, but apparently they contain too much detergent for our new washer b/c all of our dishes (and particularly our plastic stuff) tastes like soap.

Are there brands that are less perfume-y than others?

Re: What kind of dishwasher detergent do you use?

  • I am going through the same problem with Cascade.  We just got a new Kenmore dishwasher and I have yet to find the perfect soap.  Finish was better, but still not great.

  • I got these finish powerball tablet things.  The clean the dishes well but they dyed the inside of my new dishwasher red!

  • I use the cascade packets, without any problem.  But my current dishwasher is kinda old
  • Our washer is GE. I hate it! I'm thinking of using the old school powder and cutting back on the amount, but sometimes it seems like the dishes aren't clean, so I'm hesitant. It's also very poorly designed. I've sacrificed at least 8 glasses to this dishwasher in the past three months.
  • i use the cascade powder too and i am not a big fan.  i have heard the gel is really bad for your d/w so I stopped using it.  Does method make a d/w detergent?  maybe i will try that one next.

  • We use the finish pods (no powder, no red ball) and have been reasonably happy...

  • does the new house have harder water? It could be keeping it from rinsing well and perhaps a liquid dishwasher formula would be better. My parents always used liquid without problems. Also may be worth trying one of those rinse agents like Jet Dry or whatever.

That's what I normally do.  You can buy this stuff called Glass Magic.  You put it in the bottom of the machine and put the powder soap in as usual.  It keeps that white film off of glasses.

  • We use the Sam's club brand that they sell in the big tub.  Also, lately I've been putting a cup of white vinegar in the bottom and it really makes a difference, I think. It acts as a rinsing agent.

In the bottom of the soap dispenser or the bottom of the washer itself?

  • We use Cascade tabs too.  Do you use a finisher like Jet Dri?  I found that once we added it, the glasses were cleaner and didn't have the taste

No -- don't the tabs have Jet Dry?

  • We use the finish tabs with the red jet dri ball, it's the only thing I use now. I have tried the gel pacs and I don't think they work well, I felt like our dishes tasted soapy and would have a weird film on them.

  • The bottom of the dishwasher.  Just dump it right down in there.  There's a spot on the door for "finishing agent', but it's just an open hole, so as soon as I close they door, it dumps in the bottom anyway.
