Kindle

Anyone own one?

I'm thinking about buying either a Fire or Paper-white. I really want to read more this winter :)

Re: Kindle

  • I have the touch and I LOVE it! I love that I can read it outside without a problem, something to consider with the Fire. I don't know much about the paperwhite as it came out after I bought mine.

  • I have one and I LOVE it!  Mine is almost 2 years old so in the current models, I have the Kindle with the keyboard.

I guess my reservation with the paperwhite & Fire (just like anything that is backlit, like a laptop, iPad, etc.) is that there's some evidence that a lighted screen is a lot harder for your eyes to read over time.  You know, like it's much easier to read for an hour or two from a book than a computer screen.  I've never seen a paperwhite in person and I don't know for sure if the screen is exactly like a regular lighted screen, but just something to keep in mind I guess.

  • I got my H one a few years ago when they first came out. He loved it! Until he dropped it in a puddle of water and destroyed it LOL so I got him the Fire for Christmas last year. He really likes it. But like PPs said, the backlighting is definitely something to consider.

  • I have the basic Kindle and I've had it for about 6 months now. I was initially worried about getting one because I thought I'd never use it but now I take it with me everywhere. It is always in my purse and it is so nice to have because once you finish one book there are many more right at your fingertips! I would highly recommend one.

Blessing & a curse...it can get a little pricey, but there are ways to get books for cheaper.  Last year I read almost 50 books, and this year I'll read about 33, since a lot of them I've read this year are fantasy novels that are almost 1000 pages each.

If you end up getting one, I highly recommend using Goodreads to keep track of books you've read, and get suggestions for ones to read.  If you get it, make a post about Goodreads since there are a few of us on here you can add as friends =]

  • I got mine last Black Friday. I have the white keyboard one with the Wifi and 3G capability. I would get one definitely. I read all the time. This is one of those items you buy that you will definitely get your moneys worth. You can rent books from the library and amazon has tons of free books on their site. Most of the other books aren't too expensive. Definitely worth the money.

  • H got me a touch for Christmas this past year. It has 3G and I usually use the WIFI feature. I love it so much! H has the Fir. He uses it mostly for games and watching movies. He enjoys it. I use it when mine is charging. I prefer my touch. I played with the paper-white but I wasn't thrilled with it. I think mine is just fine with a book light.

  • I started off witth the wifi old school Kindle, and loved it.  I loved everything about it.  It fit in my purse, and I could take it anywhere, and I'm pretty sure it's the reason H married me (he was afraid I'd marry my kindle if he didn't step it up!)

H got me the Fire for Christmas last year, and I love that, too.  I gave my old kindle to my mom, and because they are both attached to H's amazon account, any books i download are automatically sent to that kindle also.

I was a little concerned about the backlight on the Fire, but haven't had any issues with it yet.  I have read plenty in sunlight, and haven't had a problem.  I may have to change the angle I'm holding it at slightly, but not enough to cause me any frustration or anything.

I like having the apps on the FIre, also.  I definitely use it mostly to read, but it's fun to have the movies/apps available, too.

Also, it comes with a year of Amazon Prime, I believe.. or at least it used to?
