Gift Ideas for runners.

Hello runners!

I'm hoping to use christmas to help boost DH's running gear.  I already talked to his trainer and got some ideas, but I was hoping for some more.  Erbur I hope you realize this means you. :)

Some ideas I got from his trainer.

GC for running shoes- I figured that, but he can also just get shoes when he needs them.

running socks - preferred brand?

running shorts and tights - preferred brand?

GPS stopwatch - he suggested Garmin.  Does anyone use one of these?  Do you feel like it's worth the cost?

Anything else?  We are going to the outlets in Lancaster on Saturday, trainer suggested going to the Nike outlet, that they carry a lot of runners gear.  I also think there are other outlets out there like Reebok, UA, etc.

Re: Gift Ideas for runners.

  • My brother is a runner and he loves all of the Under Armour gear. Not sure about the outlets in Lancaster, but I have on occasion seen Under Armour outlets at some complexes.
  • I love Under Armour for cold weather running, both the pants and long sleeved shirts,  They are very thin, very easy to run in, and keep you warm.  They are pricey, but so worth it.

I've been to the Nike outlet at Limerick, and it's great store.  They have an awesome selection of clothing, sneakers, and accessories that's dirt cheap as compared to retail pricing. My husband and I always grab Nike Dri-FIT performance socks, as well as running shorts.

  • This is really random but I saw these at Old Navy.  If he's running outside, this could be very helpful!

running socks - preferred brand? I am a big fan of any Smartwool products. Yes, I wear wool socks even in the summer.  It naturally pulls moisture away from your skin and prevents blisters.

running shorts and tights - preferred brand? I am not partial to any particular shorts--as I have UA, Nike, Brooks, Pearl Izumi. For winter tights, I have Nike (must have a drawstring in them, so they don't slide down when running).

GPS stopwatch - he suggested Garmin.  Does anyone use one of these?  Do you feel like it's worth the cost? Mr erbur has a Garmin 610. He LOVES it!  I have worn it for a few races and it is so cool.  You get graphs and players like this: http://connect.garmin.com/player/211993350#.UC_EK2GiA1U.email
However, it was expensive--$400. You can get different levels of Garmins with more/less bells and whistles. I suggest visiting REI, getting their co-op membership and buying through them.  You'll get 10% back and can return items even after usage.

Anything else?  We are going to the outlets in Lancaster on Saturday, trainer suggested going to the Nike outlet, that they carry a lot of runners gear.  I also think there are other outlets out there like Reebok, UA, etc.

We live near the Limerick Outlets with the same bunch of stores available. I find the Nike outlet to be a rip-off. We've had the best luck with getting shirts from UA, but have not had luck with getting tights/shorts there. And Reebok--they focus on a ton of basketball stuff--we've never found items there.

One of the best places to check out is TJMaxx/Marshalls/Ross.  You can get really good Nike/Brooks/UA gear for a cheaper price than the outlets. And, with so many New Year Resolutions, they have the workout gear for sale by mid December.

And D I C K 'S sporting goods will have some nice sales, too.

  • For running clothes, maybe get him a gift card to a local running shop or to City Sports so he can try things on?

  • Does he listen to an iPod when he runs? What about an iTunes gc?

  • DH just picked up UA tights last week at D!cks for the cold weather, they didn't have them at outlets when he went though.

My cousin just recommended to me calf sleeves as well, if he needs those, I will find out the website he orders from, much cheaper than in stores.

I wear a Nike dri fit shirt that keeps me warm, I only wear that with a tee over it and tights at night now that it's been cold. I am sure there is a mens version too

The other things on my list are a pair of tech gloves so I can use with my ipod when running

He does...I was thinking of some options with that...regular earbuds don't stay in his ear when he runs.  He has these bulky ones, but I'm sure there are other options.
