negotiate salary question

I have never tried to negotiate a salary before and I recently got a job offer which is more money than I am making now but $5k less than another offer I got from another company for a similar position.

Company 1 is offering 5K less, no PTO (company policy), but all premiums for benefits (health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance) paid completely by the employer.

Company 2 is offering 5K more than company 1, 3 weeks PTO, 11 Holidays, but employee pays 30% for employee and 60% of family plans for benefits (health, dental, vision).

I have been weighing the pros and cons of each and have decided I would prefer the first company that is offering less salary because I think it will benefit my career. The thing is that I would like for them to increase their offer to be more comparable to the second company which is offering more money and PTO.

How should I write a counter offer? Can I state I have another offer and what they are offering?

Any help would be great.

Re: negotiate salary question

  • Tell them you have another offer, but I wouldn't go into specifics. You can mention that they have PTO as well as paid holidays and that they are offering a higher salary; but leave it at that.

Let Company A know you are very interested in their company and feel as though it would be a good long-term fit, but also mention that it would be hard to walk away from another offer that has better upfront incentives.

While I worked in HR, we were willing to negotiate PTO days in lieu of salary so maybe there is a little more wiggle room there than they let on. PTO and Holidays are golden and pricesless IMHO; you need to be able to have time off.

Maybe you should quantify the differences between the companies to come up with what you see as a fair counter offer. Total up the cost of benefits as well as the PTO  and holidays plus/minus the salary difference and see where you stand.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. People always ask questions and never update.....

  • Thank you for the advice, I was able to get Company A to increase their offer over the offer from Company B. I did find out that they do build into the salary schedule for you to take time off, you just do not get paid for that time off but the salary is based on you taking up to 4 weeks off throughout the year.
