Quick Vent

Just venting today is my birthday, my Mom text me while she was at work. However, I thought she would and my Dad would have called me. My MIL, FIL, and BIL called me today to wish me a happy birthday, even my DH?s cousins called me. It just makes me a little sad that my own Mom and Dad did not call me. Vent over

Re: Quick Vent

  • Maybe they forgot.

    it can happen.

Why not call them tomorrow and go "Did you forget my birthday?" PIck the ball up on this; bet you they both plumb forgot.
  • My parents have done this. Later I found out that my mom knew I was busy with birthday plans for the day and figured she would get a hold of me another time.
  • Maybe it's just me, but a happy birthday text seems OK. She was working, she was busy. Maybe Dad forgot or had a busy day too. I wouldn't get hung up on it or hold a grudge. On the flip side to this, DW's mom is notorious for birthday snubs and her dad often texts at the last minute while my family does the whole birthday dinner & cake bit for her (birthdays are big in my immediate family). I think she feels that twinge of annoyance but gets over it in a day or so.

  • If you want to talk to your mother on your birthday, call her. That's what grown-ups do. She gave birth to you today, a bunch of years ago. Hasn't she done enough?
  • I guess I should have explained, birthdays in my family are HUGE deals. Every year since I could remember my Mom would call me at 9:33 am the time I was born, so for her to not call at all, was pretty shocking.
  • Eh, my parents forgot my birthday when I was in high school for 2-3 years in a row. I have a twin so it seems doublely weird that they forgot; there are two of us for heavens sake!

    I am sorry that sucks.

  • If she always calls (especially during a specific time) then it's likely she was probably having a very busy day or something going on in her personal life. Maybe you should give mom a call & check in on her? :-)

  • I forgot my mom's birthday on Monday. Course, I was working about 10 hours that day and so I legitimately "forgot" and then I forgot the next day and the next day (I'm a teacher without a planning period so I work loooooong hours most days and come home exhausted). So anyhoot, I called Saturday to ask what my parents wanted for Christmas and THEN it dawned on me that I forgot to call! And I usually am good about sending a card too, but didn't do that either. Oh well, it happens. My mom wasn't offended at all - she totally understood.

So, it happens both ways, I would just let it go and not worry about it. It's not worth getting upset about.

  • Thank you all, I did call her and you all were right she had a lot going on. Plus, we found out my Uncle and Aunt had to have surgery.

She also told me she would never forget my birthday. Big Smile

Again, thank you all, allowing others to way in is always good.

  • You are right to be upset, and also right to vent here rather than complaining to your parents. Call them on their birthdays, and maybe they'll realize they should have done the same for you. Happy birthday!
