What would you do?

So H was talking to MIL the other day, and she told him that we need to think of something that we want for Christmas that is $1000- $1500.

Wtf??? We don't own our house, so we don't need major appliances. We just had the wedding, so we have EVERYthing we want/ need housewares related (including a new tv/ sound system). We are at a loss... And she made it very clear that she doesn't want to get several smaller things, she wants to get one big thing. And H says he feels weird saying we want gift cards.

Is there something we're not thinking of??

  • A check??

  • What about furniture? Is there anything you could replace or that you want new of? Or a new mattress for your bed?

I agree with this and to add what about a new BBQ, or seasons tickets to a sporting event or a weekend away at some fancy resort (either local or not...), Or a contribution to a "baby/future home or rrsp" fund?

  • I WISH she would just give us a check, but H doesn't feel comfortable with asking for money/ gift cards.

And we got a new couch less than a year ago, and we got a really nice mattress when we moved into the house 3 years ago- Nothing really needs to be replaced.

I just feel like she is going to spend a wad of cash on something we really don't want or need- It feels like such a waste to me :/

  • That does kind of suck that you don't need much for your home and you can't just ask for a check. Just look at this has a chance to splurge on something that you would never in a million years buy for yourself. I think the idea for a vacation would be great! Who doesn't want a free vacation Smile

  • I think the vacation is a good idea. Also the season tickets to a sporting event would be good.
  • I was going to say vacation or tickets to something you love!?

  • Hmm....interesting deleima.  Not sure I've ever heard of anyone in this situation before!  I guess if she is wanting you to tell her what you want...tell her.  If you want to just put it into savings for a down payment on a house someday or future child, tell her that is what you would like to do with it.  I bet she would understand more than you think.

    If not....vacay anyone?

  • If she won't give you a check, a vacation is the only other thing that I could think of...

  • Washer/dryer...you can always take those with you when you buy a house...a set of new tires for the car. A big TV, a sound system, a recliner....
  • Is there any furniture you want? What about a new appliance?
