Help me with this letter

So, my waitressing job is VERY overstaffed.  They will have 8 people on one slow shift and we all stand around making no money.  Yes, I know a lot of you are going to say... get a new job.  Well, when it is good here I do make money, plus it is the only place I can find right now that is willing to let me work only two shifts a week.  The owner is an older man who is hardly there, but he cares about what is going on.  The GM is awful and he always wants a TON of servers on... for no reason.  If there were less people, the ones who were there would actually make some money!

So, what do you think of this letter?  Thanks so much for your time to read it.

 Dear Mr. M,

I am writing you this letter on behalf of the waitstaff at Cafe ****.  We all feel that every shift is overstaffed, therefore making us less money, and costing you more to keep more servers on the payroll.  There are many times were the restaurant is basically empty and we will have eight servers on the clock, standing around with no tables to attend to.  The managers will make us stand around, even when it is extremely slow.  They think we need an excess of people on, when in reality, we do not.

This is an issue that has been going on for quite some time now, and a lot of servers are getting very frustrated, upset,  and not making enough money to pay for their bills.  Many of the servers are mothers,  and students, and need to provide for themselves and their families.   If this continues to happen, many of us will be forced to quit.  We all talk about this quite frequently, and every single server feels the exact same way.

I hope you will take this letter into serious consideration, as something really needs to change at ***.  Happier employees will equal people not quitting their jobs, people making more money, and you spending less money on the payroll.

Thank you so much for your time,

A concerned *** Employee

Re: Help me with this letter

  • In my experience complaint letters like this usually work better if you also include positive things, and make them seem less like a threat.

    I really appreciate ...

    I understand that ...

    It concerns me...

I don't think I would include the sentence:  "We all talk about this quite frequently",  This makes it seem less like you're just standing around gossiping and complaining.

    Please pass the ice cream.
  • Thank you so much for your input :)
  • Is it possible the reason why so many servers are staffed at once is because management needs a certain number of servers on the payroll per month?

I worked at a restaurant where management had to have some many servers (a specific number) on the payroll each month. It was called a "grid".
