What do you wear to work when it's cold?

I'm having the most difficult time crafting a cold weather business casual wardrobe. Last winter (my first that required business casual) I wore flats with no socks all winter. I froze. This winter I'm hoping to be less cold. Today I'm wearing socks with flats, and I look and feel like the lamest person ever. I went shopping for boots, thinking I could wear boots underneath my dress pants, but I think the part of the boot that would stick out underneath the dress pants would look kind of awkward if you couldn't see the rest of the boot. Maybe I'm being weird?

I've thought it might be warmer to wear dresses and skirts with tights, but since I'm not actually sure that would be warmer I don't want to invest a lot in that theory and still be cold.

I kind of feel like there's some sort of fundamental piece of knowledge that comes with being a human that I'm missing here. How do I dress professionally and still be warm?

Please pass the ice cream.

Re: What do you wear to work when it's cold?

  • I work int eh same environment and tend to go for dresses and skirts with tights and cardigans. I mean, my feet don't freeze so I don't know if that is acceptable for "not cold" for you... I usually buy sweater tights. and wear my outfits with high boots

Are you wearing trouser socks with your flats or liek white socks? You can certainly wear a pair of black trouser socks with your black dress pants and flats. It still isnt the most stylish--but I mean it does the trick.

Or I tend to wear what I call grandma socks, basically nude trouser socks. They don't do a lot for the cold, but I think they make wearing flats a lot better or heels for that matter, more comofrtable and they add a tiny bit of something over your foot.

Other than that, I have seen others wear heeled boots under dress pants. I think it looks ok, not great but its fine.

Otherwise, I tend to grin and bear it, its warm inside my office and I only run out to the parking lot. If you are commuting then wear uggs and change your shoes- thats what I used to do. No office environment should be so cold that you are freezing to have 3" of your foot exposed.

  • I'm always cold, I usually dress in layers in the colder months.  Also, a nice pashmina/scarf is a good option.  I have one around my neck today for a scarf, wearing a knit dress, tights and shoes.
  • i used to work in a business casual environment. I would wear dress pants with high heeled boots all the time, they look fine. Just make sure your pants are the right length. i also wear cardigans or sweaters that were slightly more dressy.  I am always freezing so i even wear thin long johns under my clothes when it was super cold. They are called Cuddle Duds.  Sweaters with thick tights and tall boots work too.  You could also wear a nice shirt with a scarf to keep your neck warm.

edit** that should have said sweater dresses with thick tights and tall boots! lol

  • I wear winter boots for the walk from my car to my cubicle and then I switch over to whatever shoes I want to wear that day. It's a bit of a hassle but it's a heck of a lot more comfortable in the long run.

I'm also the weirdo who keeps a few pairs of basic shoes at my desk...so I've got a standard pair of black, standard brown and then a pair of red heels, so I'm not having to carry in shoes to work with me every day.

  • i'm not sure this helps, because i don't work in an office (as a teacher), but i wear a lot of dresses with leggings and boots in cold weather.  like uggs, i guess? but not uggs.  i have several pairs (brown, black, grey) with fuzzy goodness inside them.  and i wear a cardigan over the dress.  this makes my wardrobe stretch further, because these are the same dresses i wear in the fall and spring as well--some of them are sleeveless--with sweaters over them and leggings under them.  i have found, after trying many different pants/socks combinations that this has been the most comfortable and warmest option.  i teach in the country, though, so although a lot of people are "still" dressing like this, it might not be the most fashion-forward option.  hahaha
  • you can try wearing snug fitting high boots under your pants.  A lot of ladies in my office do that and it's fine.  On days that I'm really cold I've actually worn tights under my pants and worn flats.  All my tights are patterned so you cna see them with my shoes.  I layer a lot as well...usually a short sleeved shirt under a sweater and maybe a pashmina around my neck.

I ALWAYS wear winter boots in winter when I drive to work because I want to be prepared to walk/stand in the cold if my car ever breaks down (it's happened). Then I leave nice shoes at work to cahnge into.

  • I wear socks with flats all the time. I tend to pick out socks that match my pants so they blend in more. I don;t think its that bad, most of the time my pant leg hide the fact I am wearing socks at all. I would rather be warm, then not wear socks.

  • I buy cute heeled boots to wear under slacks as my staple outfit.
