My DH and I looked at a cute house the other day. We loved the setting, lot, etc but the house would be a little small compared to what we've been looking for. We had thought about putting an addition off the back of the house and adding an additional garage since its a one car right now. Anybody know what the estimate is per square foot for an addition? TIa
Re: Cost of Addition
Costs vary by location, but where I am it would be well over 100K to do those and that is a very conservative beginning.. Have a contractor look at the house and give you an estimate. (will there be a need to upgrade the heating/cooling system to accommodate more sq ft? Update electrical box? Plumbing?
Will the additional garage need a driveway?

Cost will vary.
We live in a HCOL area. We are in the middle of an addition/renovation. We added a second car garage, and put a three story addition on the back which includes an unfinished basement room that we'll use as an exercise room, a new section in the kitchen which when combined with opening up the old laundry room will double the kitchen size, and a new master bath (we converted the old, much too small, master bath into the new laundry room). We also put on new siding, a new roof, and got new windows. There will be costs for cabinets, countertops, appliances, the new bath and shower, flooring, paint, and some odds and ends. We haven't even begun to price the new driveway yet since with the cold weather we're waiting until next year to pour the concrete.
Total cost is just over $100K. And my DH did *all* of the plumbing and electrical work himself except for the temporary power hookup, which the power company does for free. That's saving us a huge amount of money. For example, our contractor told us that dealing with the existing kitchen plumbing would have cost around $5K additional, and he'd have charged about $10K to do the master bath. That doesn't include adding any *new* plumbing, doing any electrical work, etc. which we're basically doing for the cost of supplies. So had we paid contractors for the full job we'd be pushing $150K easy.
Your addition may not be as involved, but it still has the potential to be pretty expensive. And as a pp said, based on where power lines and the like are it can get tricky. You may also need to look into permitting; our garage addition extends closer to the property line than allowed by the county so we had to go through a special permitting process to get permission. That took almost a year and cost about $900 with no guarantee that it would be approved (you pay either way and fortunately, we did get the permit after all that).
