Hi there:

I consider you the resident travel expert here. :) Do I remember seeing you went to Key Largo or Key West in the last year??

I ask because DH has always wanted to go. He loves to fish and you tend to see guys on all the fishing shows in the keys. Anyway for Christmas I proposed instead of buying each other stuff when neither needs anything that maybe in March we would go to either Key Largo or West. I have a ton of Marriott points and our 4 days stay would be covered. From what I've read Key Largo is more laid back? Any suggestions, thoughts, reviews?

Thank you!

  • hey there :)  Funny, you are the third person to ask me about KW in the past two weeks.  2 separate friends just vacationed there in the past week.

Yes -  we were in KW in July for Mike's birthday.  And we do the same thing with gifts too.  key west is amazing.  i LOVE it there.

Key Largo and KW are pretty far apart - not sure at which key you wanted to stay.  I have never stayed at KL - we only drove through it en route to KW.  Yes, KL is much more laid back than Key West... Key West is, well, Key West!!

We also had lots of Marriott points and were planning on using them for our KW trip but the Marriotts on KW are in really crappy locations.   They are in New Town which is not near Old Town at all (where Duval St and all of the "action" is in KW.  You have to take a shuttle to get over to Duval or the beaches which isn't something we were into.  So we saved our Marriott points for our trip to Puerto Rico next month.

We stayed at the Southernmost Hotel on the Beach and it was literally amazing.  LOVED IT.  Not sure how much you've researched KW, but the beaches are pretty blah - not like miles and miles of sandy white carribean beaches.  they are all man made and pretty small and very rocky.  so just an FYI not to be disappointed.

but to answer your Q about fishing - i don't fish but from what I read the keys are huge fishing spots - especially Islamorada which i believe is considered the sport fishing capital of the world.

i love love love key west.  we like to have a good time and there is definitely a party vibe - i would be careful when you go in March due to the college spring break crowd.

here is my KW review which details our trip, how we got there, hotel, where we ate (always #1 of importance to me :)

  • Thank you!!! All very helpful. :) I will check out your review also. Thank you.

I did think March might be an issue with Spring break. Note to self. I have a big work conference the first week of March, so I know taking time for a long weekend before will be frowned upon. Boo hiss.

    Thank you again.

  • butting in.

We Honeymooned in KW. that was in Sept- it was great, but September is "Off season" so it wasnt' as big of a party as it can be in the high times. That being said I would also check the calender of events for Key West. They have several crazy festivals and things so if you DON'T want to be part of that your first trip it would be worth it to check dates.  We stayed in the Heron House and it was really nice. I recommend The Danger if you want to do any sailing trips!
