I know this has been discussed before, and I feel like it's something we struggle with every year. How do you handle this?
I thought I had found a great solution this year: I was going to leave a heavy winter coat with hat/gloves for each kid at daycare; it would just stay there so they would have it for outside time (we had another heavy coat for each of them at home, to use on weekends) Then, going into school and leaving at night, they would each just wear a fleece so I wouldn't have to worry about stuffing them into a carseat and getting the straps tight enough (our daycare has a pull around circle thing that's right near the entrance, so they really don't have to walk far at all).
I apparently had forgotten just how cold it can be in the mornings (and it's not even December yet!), and even though they only go a very short distance out of the car and into the building, I feel guilty having them in just a fleece.
What do you do?
Re: Coats vs. Carseats
My three sons!
When she was an infant we had the carseat cover thing. Then did a fleece the next winter. But since then we do a coat in the car. It's a winter coat but its not horribly puffy. And dd is usually warmer than me so its warm enough but more than a fleece. Honestly we tighten her in pretty ridiculously tight. With how tight she is and with her coat type I just don't see how it could possibly be an issue. IDK at first I was nervous but it works for us and I don't really feel its unsafe.
I think it depends on how big a coat it is and you really have to make sure the straps are on good and really tight.
We take their coats off once we get them into the car and then put them back on before they get out of the car. This process is much easier with the minivan! Otherwise, our parking is just steps away from the entrance and we keep our car pretty toasty, so if they happen to not cooperate with the putting on of coats and don't wear one to/from the car, I am okay with it.
i agree, I really take the time to tighten the straps and make sure the coat is not in the way. I hate winter for this reason!
I was wondering this same thing this morning. S's coat is pretty puffy, but he does have a windbreaker that I've been putting him in because I am worried I won't get it tight enough with the winter coat. We can pull RIGHT up to the door at school, so I guess I'll just stick with the windbreaker. He's not able to put his coat on by himself, and it seems silly for me to stand there with the door open to put it on for the 2 steps it takes us to get in.
We also just got a baby blanket (18 months later) from my parent's friends, so maybe I'll leave that one in the car.
I hate being cold.
At least its supposed to be in the 50's this weekend!
