OPK's

So for those of you ladies currently using these or have ever used one I need some advice. This is the first month I am using them and I have no clue if I am doing it right. Based on the instructions that came with it and my cycle it says to start testing last Friday. Well I forgot and I started testing on Saturday. Since then no positives could it be that Friday would have been positive or could it just be that I didn't ovulate this month? Or am I just over reacting and some what jumping the gun since it has only been 5 days?

Any advice would be great here. AF is due to arrive Dec 9 if that helps with the time line any. I am getting really confused with all these dates and just would like a little more assurance on this.

TIA ladies!

Re: OPK's

  • Ok Mancila -- you know me and not TTC but I don't blame you one single bit getting confused by the dates. Just "listening" to you all talk confuses the hell out of me. I honestly don't have a clue what you all are talking about 99% of the time! Sorry I'm absolutely no help to you on this one...just wanted you to know you are not the only confused one!
  • Ok let me think for a moment.  When was the first day of your cycle, how long are your cycles?  I need to know that to help you out a bit.  My Dr recommends starting opk's on cd 10 and that you use them in the afternoon around 4-5 ish.  I thed to O late, usually around CD 17 so you may not have missed it.

yeah, your current CD and your typical cycle length would help pinpoint when you should start using them.  I'm similar to Kushie and O later (around CD 17).  I would probably start testing around CD 12-14 unless I had other symptoms of O like fertile CM, then I would start testing earlier.

once you start peeing on sticks it can become addicting!  lol

  • Cycles are usually 32 days in length. This cycle started on Nov 8. I started the OPK on CD 17 since I actually missed day 16 but the paperwork says to start on CD 16.

Should I just continue until I get to AF then try earlier next month?

  • if you're temping, I would keep testing until you confirm O with a temp spike.  If you're not temping then I would keep peeing on sticks until AF :-P  but that's just me and I have tons of wondfo OPKs under my kitchen sink hehe

I have tons of sticks since I got a kit from amazon. And I am temping and according to my charts the spike was on CD 17 which was when I started testing.  I guess if this continues next month then when I go to my yearly check up in Jan I can mention this to the dr.

  • the spike comes after O and the OPK won't be positive then, it's only positive right before you O.

do you have a link to your chart?

I agree, You may have missed your surge on the opk but I would keep poas until I got coverline.  Do you have a link to your chart?

  • According to the calender it says tomorrow is my O date so maybe I got a little ahead of myself but here is the link to my chart just to make sure it all looks good. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ttc/index.php?interface=0 I did miss a few days temping while H and I were on vacation but it was just a few days into the cycle so that shouldn't affect it. How many days after the spike in temp is O supposed to be??
  • Got this from this website: http://www.babycenter.com/0_detecting-ovulation_484.bc "Following ovulation, your temperature can increase by 0.4 to 1.0 degrees. You won't feel the shift, but you can detect it by using a basal body temperature (BBT) thermometer. This temperature spike indicates that you've ovulated, because releasing an egg stimulates the production of the hormone progesterone, which raises body temperature." The temp spike happens after you've alrady ovulated Also, I couldn't get your link to work to your chart. Try and post it again :)

  • This might also be helpful so you can have a better idea of when you might O. It lets you adjust your cycle length too! http://www.babycenter.com/ovulation-calculator

  • From your chart on Fertility Friend there should be a button under your chart that says, "share" you have to click that to get the link to your chart, otherwise you keep linking us to our own charts.

Also, FF can only tell you the predicted O date. If it says your O date is tomorrow, then it's pretty much just an educated guess based on your previous cycles. At this point I would just do like we've recommended and keep peeing on sticks until they show a positive, or FF gives you cross-hairs showing you've already O'd based on your temps.

  • The LH hormone (that the OPK is testing for) increases to a peak (that's when you get a positive OPK). After it peaks it drops dramatically and then you ovulate. After you O your temp will spike, usually 12-24 hours after. So the cycle goes:

    1. Positive OPK

    2. Ovulation

    3. Temp Spike

There's a chart in TCOYF that I meant to bring to work today and scan and post for you. It's a graph of the hormones involved and their levels during your cycle, it's pretty neat. (But I like graphs, so I'm into that sort of thing)

  • The second link I posted was from hitting the share button underneath it I have no idea why it's acting weird. But I do think I am just going to keep POAS until either it's positive or AF shows up. And next month I am gonna start testing earlier.
