Holiday card etiquette

We were married this year and have never sent holiday cards. We receive only a few. We found some that we love and have thought of sending them to the people who sent us gifts (only 11 people were invited to the wedding, but many still sent gifts). The original list was so long that I really could have a job sending out cards, but these people have gone above and beyond to show that they are supportive. Is it unacceptable to send holiday cards to only a handful of people and not evey friend or cousin? I would love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks! Nico

Re: Holiday card etiquette

  • If they don't send you a Christmas card, I see absolutely no reason to feel any obligation what so ever to send them a card.

The only reason I might send an extra one out is if you know you've got that one special relative who keeps score on stuff like this and will get their feathers all ruffled.  Sometimes it's worth the extra work just to keep the peace.

If you were fine with not sending these people a wedding invitation, why are you suddenly questioning the idea of not sending them a Christmas card?

Also, I hope you sent the people who went "above and beyond to be supportive" a nice thank you note.  A personal hand written thank you note would mean WAY more to me than a Christmas card.

  • A thank you note/ card for a wedding gift is so important. I'm note a thank you note writer but made sure to send a personalized, hand written thank you for our wedding gifts.

Im the crazy person who sends cards to everyone. I honestly don't get many in return but if I received cards from the 60ish families/ friends I send them to I wouldn't know what to do.

Send cards to the people you want to send them to. No need to send to all the cousins just because you only want to send to one and are worried the others will be hurt. It means much more When the card is thoughtful. I want to send cards to that many people. I like it and have hand written every one.

  • We keep our Christmas card list in a spreadsheet.  If we haven't received a card from someone in 2 years, we don't send one anymore.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • I sent to our close family and friends...and bought 3-4 extra in case we receive a card we weren't expecting and can then reciprocate.  Being our first married christmas, we're not sure who's going to send us cards! =)  comparing to wedding lists...we sent christmas cards to about 1/5 of the list.

it helps that my mom also sends cards to just about everyone in our huge family - and her card has a photo of hubby and I in it too.... so anyone that we leave out, she'll catch. makes it a little easier on us.
