Advent Calendars

Did you have one growing up? Was it strictly chocolate? Was it a big deal? I was thinking it was a tradition we could start, but I don't want it to be a sweetie everyday.

Re: Advent Calendars

  • We didn't have one at home, but I went to Catholic School and some of the teachers would have them up and everyday someone else would open the "door" for the day. I have seen really cute ones in places like CVS and Walgreens that you can put on the refrigerator. My mom bought me a Peanuts one a few years back in one of those stores and I put it away. When LO is a little bigger, I will hang it up and we'll use it. No treats though.

  • The ones I had growing up had no sweets or tchotchkes, it was a little paper window that would open.
  • We had something like this as kids:

  • We did the paper windows with my parents as kids, but now do the chocolate.

When I was a little kid my aunt used to watch me.  We always created a chain of construction paper garland 24 long.  Every day we would rip one of the rings off.  I thought it was a very visual way to see Christmas was getting closer.  Now Emma is getting older I plan on doing it with her for tomorrow because I think she would like it, and as a tribute to my Aunt who passed away.

    Something like this:
  • Funny, I was just looking to purchase an Advent calendar the other day.  My mom worked at a German pharma company and some of the managers in Germany would bring one over to her when they visited the office.  They were cardboard ones though and did have chocolate.

I'm looking to purchase something similar to the one Tracy posted - one that has ornaments instead of sweets.  Etsy has some really nice ones.

  • We had chocolate ones. The candy was incredibly small like a nickel. I refuse to buy my child 25 books or small toys aka the ones I see on pinterest.

I have seen cotton balls one a day on santa's beard or ornament a day on the tree.

Uh, what? Why do kids need more gifts, especially leading up to Christmas??

Seriously. One popular pin I see is twenty five books wrapped leading up to Xmas!

  • I saw that one about the 25 books as well. They wrap each one individually, and each night you read a new book. We don't have children, but that is too much in my opinion. I like Lando's idea, that is cheap and easy!

    :::shudders:::  I hate cotton balls.

We had the chocolate ones as a kid and I loved them. The chocolates were so small, I don't think I would have a problem with my kids having them too.

  • I bought this one at Target the other day, I think a dove chocolate will fit in a box they're pretty small, which is great. And this is what I have so far for each one. Some days it's an activity, or a sticker.

    Dec 1st - let's take a train ride
    2 - go see a puppet show
    3 - sticker
    4 - write a letter to Santa
    5 - Longwood gardens
    6 - candy
    7 - phoenixville parade
    8 -  firebird festival
9 - send out Xmas cards
    10 - sticker
11 - ice cream for dessert
    12 -
    13 - breakfast for dinner
    14 -candy
    15 - luminaries walk
    16
    17 - candy
    18 - make teacher present
    19
    20 -candy
21 - last day of school
    22 - Virginia
    23 - baltimore
    24 - piece of candy

Some of it is still vague, I want to make cookies, maybe see a live navity, stuff like that, but I didn't want to be tied down. So I'm going to fill the boxes in week by week.

  • We always had them when we were little, but they didn't have anything in them. My mom always buys them for the kids and she buys the ones with chocolate in them. The kids are so excited to open them tomorrow

  • We had them growing up, and sometimes there was chocolate, but most of the time it was just a paper one we hung on the fridge and opened a door a day.  My mom bought the kids a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse one that we will start tomorrow- just a little door opening per day, nothing inside of them.  (and thanks for the post- I totally forgot about it until now!)

  • LOL we are doing the books. Buuuuuuuut I already had 15 Christmas books, so I got 10 more on our local FB yard sale for 50c each.

My best friend got us a "train" advent calendar last year. So this year I'm either putting a slip of paper in a day that is something for us to do/celebrate/help or a gold chocolate coin from TJ.
