Holiday gifts for daycare teachers?

I'm trying to figure out (and budget for) the Christmas gifts for P's daycare teachers. He has 3 main teachers in his class and then I was going to get them for the 2 teachers in the other infant class because they all sort of float and rotate between the 2 rooms, so basically all 5 teachers have cared for P at some point.

I was thinking Starbucks giftcards and was going to get like $10-$15 ones, but I was lurking on the Working Moms board and they were all talking about spending closer to $30-$50 per teacher. Is that the norm? I obviously don't want to be cheap about it - they care for P every day and that's invaluable!

I feel like a $30-$50 Starbucks giftcard is a bit of overkill - I don't know anyone who can order that much coffee (and I love coffee!) So maybe for somewhere else? I have no idea though - Target? What are you ladies doing for your LO's teachers? Any creative ideas? I'd like to stay away from food because I think people are weird about getting homemade food.

Re: Holiday gifts for daycare teachers?

  • $30 to $50 is WAY too much to spend per teacher.  I was going to suggest a $5 GC because it's a nice treat, but you do also actually pay them.  $10 would be nicer, depending on your budget.  I wouldn't go over $15.

Target would be good, too, but you'll have to do at least $15 or they won't be able to get anything.  I'd stick w/ Starbucks.  It's nice to not have to pay for coffee.

  • Are you crafty at all? You could do a travel mug with a gift card and make one of those sleeves to go around a travel mug or Starbucks cup so your hand doesn't get burnt. You could knit the sleeve or sew a simple curved rectangle-ish shape with some velcro on the ends.

ITA. I'm thinking I'll give G's teacher a nice card and a $10 gc for somewhere like Panera or Starbucks.

  • Have you checked out the Vera Bradley website sale section? I've bought a lot great gifts from there this year and the prices are pretty good. I got all of my paras in my classroom these (they're getting one, not one of each, and I'm pairing it with an Avon pocket lotion.)

You could do the small wallets with a Starbucks GC, if you really want to get the GC, or you could get some other items (they have a greal selection of stuff for under $15 and I *think* if you sign up for their e-mails you'll get some kind of coupon and free shipping.)

No problem! I did order mine over a month ago, so they had a bit more of a selection (and there was a coupon for like 40% off), but what I got was really cute and it looks really nice all wrapped up with the lotion and a little card.

I also got my mom and MIL lunchboxes and iPad cases from Vera Bradley. I don't love the patterns for myself, but I know they both do. And honestly, the stuff is good quality. I've got a few pieces from there (I loooooove my checkbook cover, weird, I know) and they really last.

  • What about a $10 Starbucks card stuffed in a mug or travel mug?

  • Starbucks does the 12 days of christmas deals starting tomorrow, you can google it for exact details. I think it's monday they have a reusable travel mug that gets free refills the entire month of January. Last year they were $20, I got one for DD's speech therapist and it was a big hit. I plan to do that for her preschool teachers this year.

i don't have any kiddos myself yet, been lurking over here for a couple months.

I have been working in daycare since 2004, If the teacher truly is a selfless teacher, she will be over the moon with anything you give her.

Every class has a lead teacher (look on the door or on the sheets that go home. I know it is really hard to tell a lead from an assistant in the infant room because the ratio teacher/child is very low. Depending on the state/city. I am from Texas, here the ratio is 1 teacher per 3-4 infants. Which I think is kind of high) and maybe give the lead something a little more, like if you give everyone a gift card to Starbucks, give her $15 and everyone else $10.

Through the years the things that stick out the most is a $50 gc to chilis (I got this from a family I babysit for as well as a child in my toddler class, trust me I never expected that much.)

One parent got me a festive book from her bank, it was a book of $25 one dollar bills. I thought it was so cool.

A jar of hot coca with a recipe and how to use it, it was decorated and you could tell she put a lot of work on it, I still have the jar with the coca.

I also have so many cards that I have kept from kids and parents. Since 2004 I have been an afternoon worker, assistant, lead, floater and now I can add Montessori assistant teacher to this.

Sorry for any errors, I am nesting on my phone. I hope I am not stepping out of line and helped you out. I promise your child's teacher will be so great full for whatever you give her. I thought you might want to hear from the other side :)

    Happy Friday!

This would be awesome! If you don't know if your son's teacher likes coffee you can always ask. If she is a big coffee drinker, then this would be an awesome gift! I think I am going to go look this up and get one myself!

  • I was planning on $25 per main teacher and $15 for the floaters.  We have 2 head teachers and 3 floaters.

I was thinking target gift cards, but the closest target to us is 25 minutes away.  There's a Sheetz right down the street from the daycare.  I figure they can get coffee, lunch to go or breakfast, or if nothing else, gas.  I was going to add a little baked thing or something like homemade peppermint marshmallows or something like that with the sheetz card.  I haven't figured it all out yet.

Truth! I don't like/drink coffee/hot beverages either. The only thing I've ever had from Starbucks is their cinnamon cake Yes. I would only get a GC for a place that has a very specific type of food/beverage if I was certain the person liked that food/drink/restaurant.

  • Z has 3 preschool teachers.  I'm going to get them each a $5 starbucks gift card and make them some sort of pound cake or other yummy treat (currently I'm looking at eggnog pound cake on pinterest).

ETA:  Just saw you didn't want to give homemade treats.  Sorry!  That's just how I roll.  (And I gave them raspberry and blackberry swirled pound cakes at the end of last year...)

  • I am making cookies for DS' DCP (I know you said no food).  We make cookies for coworkers and neighbors as gifts.  It's easy, cheap, and my cookies are delicious.

I would not spend $35 on a present for a teacher, and I am one.  I think a nice card and a small gift card to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts so they can pick up a coffee is fine.

ETA:  Both places also have pastries, so non coffee drinkers can go, too.  Honestly, what I like the most is cards with notes from parents or kids.

  • We will probably do some sort of gift card for our dcp and something more personal next year.  I am thinking around $50 but A goes to an in home and it is the same person caring for her all day, every day vs a center where there might be more than one person.  I think a coffee gc or even visa giftcard would be just fine.  You could even have P help make a card.

  • Hey thanks for the post, I've had the same types of problems trying to buy gifts for my 3 kids and their teachers.  I don't want to spend a million dollars but I want to get them something they like.  Just before Christmas I found this website I bought gifts for all 3 off of it.  If nothing else, it might give you some different ideas.
