Moms that stopped pumping but still BF

Pumping is finally coming to an end!  I'm stopping next week as a birthday gift to myself.

I'm down to one pump session a day.  I still nurse in the morning around 5:30am and at night around 8pm.  J will be a year next week but I think I'd like to still nurse for a bit longer.

Were you still able to BF morning/night or did your supply tank?  Also, did you pump during the day for a minute or two to relieve fullness or did you just skip it.  I'm worried about painful, blocked ducts.

Re: Moms that stopped pumping but still BF

  • Starting at 4 months I had to pump on my right side and couldn't nurse on it at all. At 15 months Brooks night weaned and I stopped pumping and just fed him exclusively on the left, by this time it was usually just a morning, one time during the day and a night nursing. He always seemed fine, and content.

Good luck and congrats for getting this far.

  • Congrats!  I am super jealous.  I have been pumping for a week and I hate it so much!

  • Tracy, I reached my peak level of irritation a couple months ago.  I debated throwing my pump in the Schuylkill or going Office Space-style on it.

  • Congrats on ditching the pump! I continued bfing for months after I stopped pumping. I nursed morning and evening then on weekends I had a few sessions in between.

You should be fine. Your body makes what the baby takes so you should adjust just like you've been doing all along. And bc you're just pumping once a day you prob won't be engorged for more then a day or two if at all once you stop pumping.

    Good luck and congrats again!

  • When dd was one year I stopped pumping and nursed when I was with her morning, evening, and. Weekend times. I didn't have any issues but she self weaned just month or two later so I'm not sure if my supply would have held up longer or not. Prior to dropping the pumping I was pumping 2x a day. I pumped once a day for a couple days and them stopped entirely. I remember it bring uncomfortable but not painful and no issues. Good luck and congrats!! What an accomplishment!

  • When Hunter was 9 months we went on vacation for a week.  When we got  back and I had to start pumping again, I was like EFF.  THIS.    In the week that I didn't have to worry about pumping, I realized how miserable it made me.

I think I suffered through another week, and then started to just pump once a day- basically for relief.  I think by the time he was 10 1/2 months, I finally just left the pump and home.

I breast fed until 11 1/2 months.  My supply kept up even though I cut out pumping.  I could have gone longer, but two days in a row he bit me so hard that I bled, so I went cold turkey.

  • As you know, I'm dealing with the same issue.

    Found this on Kellymom:

What I can't yet quite grasp in my head is: if the babysitter offers thawed BM during the day with solids and I don't pump to replace, is my supply going to tank? Or is it better that she just gives him solids and water and then I nurse when I get back?

  • Jen- I stopped pumping at just over a year and we were able to bf until 16 months.  He weaned when I went overseas for a week and that was that.  You can do it.

I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast and drink a ton of water so I am not sure if that helped keep my supply up or not.

Yes, I believe if you don't continue to pump/nurse at that time, your body will eventually learn that baby isn't going to eat at this time.  I think missing once won't affect you but if you do a few days in a row, I think your supply might dip.

You nurse more during the day than I do so also don't think missing one session will make a difference.  Since I'm transitioning to a a wake up and bedtime feeding, I was concerned.

Thanks for the KM link, I don't know why I didn't think to look there.
