Anniversary in the Burgh

My second anniversary is January 1st and I am having a hard time planning something to do while staying close to Pittsburgh. My husband planned our first anniversary and we went to a bed and breakfast. That was great but I would like to switch it up. We don't need anything extravagant but would like to celebrate with a budget around $215. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

 Thanks!

Re: Anniversary in the Burgh

  • is the $215 for a hotel room + dinner ?  or just for your room?

  • What are you "into" - museums, sightseeing, fine dining? Check out the shows available around the time you'll be in the area: http://culturaldistrict.org/ If it's dinner, then park at Station Square, take the incline up to Mt. Washington and sightsee and/or have dinner up there (Monterey Bay, Lemont...plenty of places to choose from!). If you're here over a weekend, I think walking around the Strip District on a Saturday morning is a fun, relaxing thing to do: ethnice shops, "boutiques", street vendors (though I'm not sure how hopping the place will be in January, compared to warmer months). Museums: http://www.visitpittsburgh.com/essentials/visual-arts/?gclid=CO6axK3wgLQCFQqk4AodlmUAiA One last thought - if you're looking to go out on NYE, check out First Night. http://www.firstnightpgh.org/ Have fun!

  • Oglebay should still be decorated with Christmas lights if you want somewhere to stay overnight.

You could go for a couple's massage.  (I recommend Osiris Day Spa which is north of the city by about 45 min)

We like the CLO caberet, depending on what shows are playing.

Is the Symphony Holiday Pops still playing then?

As one past poster said, you could stay downtown for First Night.

     Happy anniversary!

  • Sorry I should have clarified! We live in Beaver Falls so an overnight isn't necessary. I'm thinking lunch/dinner and some fun activities. So I hope $215 will go a long way since we are not planning on staying over this year. We have done Strip District before and I'm not sure what the weather will be like so I am trying to stay away from outdoors activities in case its snowing or something. With how warm it is now, it is hard to imagine! My husband would not sit through a show if I paid him so those types of activities are out of the question. I thought First Night would be fun too but I brought it up in conversation and he thought it would be a miserable experience being outside so long... he hates the cold. A couples massage sounds great so I will look into that. Any other suggestions on restaurants would be fantastic. It doesn't have to be in Pittsburgh just within 45 min of Beaver Falls. Thanks!

  • i am from BF :)

do you guys like the casino scene?  what about an overnight at mountaineer?

there is also a fun red bus that takes you around the city (starting at the cheesecake factory in the south side) so you can hop on/hop off at various city hot spots.  i've done this with my girlfriends and it's a good time.

for nice dinners in pittsburgh: capital grill, tamari, avenue b, spoon are all delicious favorites of mine.

  • Are you planning to go out 12/31 or 1/1? Because I'm sure you are aware, or maybe it's an FYI,  most places except for chains are closed 1/1. Our anniversary is also 1/1 and we run in to this problem. We ended up at Olive Garden last year and decided in the future we would do dinner on 12/31 if that was what we wanted to do. I can tell you that the lemont is definitely closed because the is where we got married and we had the place to ourselves-it was closed that day, they just brought enough staff in to cover our wedding that evening. We also learned that Ruth's Chris and capital grille is closed-we called last year and found that out. I don't know what the usual touristy activities are like that day. The problem is that it is considered a holiday and some places treat it as such.

This year we are considering attempting to do dinner in the city on NYE. Depending on who has availability (if any): the lemont, la tavola, Ruth's Chris,  capital grille, Morton's, pgh rare. We have a voucher to stay at a radisson. The one in greentree isn't great but I figure we won't be doing much traveling now with the baby and I remember how noisy guests were when I stayed at the former Hilton the night before the wedding so I figure a hotel out of the city might be better anyways. We're going to spend the day of our actual anniversary (our 3rd) as a family. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Last year we went out on 12/31 for dinner. I figured 1/1 would be hard since it is a holiday.  On our actual anniversary we will probably just relax at home with our dog. Thanks for all the great ideas. I definitely have a lot to choose from!
