sleeping help

As you know, my DH quit chewing almost 3 months ago ( Big Smile ).  When he first quit he was having a hard time sleeping, which I've read is common when going through that.  Then it seemed around the 2 month mark it started getting better.

Well, starting last week, he's having trouble again.  Last night I woke up at 1:30 & he was wide awake.  And hardly fell back asleep before getting up for work.

I feel so bad for him, and don't know what to do!  He even took 2 pills of melatonin before bed last night.  He doesn't want to take any OTC sleeping pills.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help stay asleep?

Re: sleeping help

  • I love melatonin (I like liquid melatonin since you can control how much to take (a few drops does the trick most nights)), but, if he doesn't want to take anything there's always Chamomile sleepy time tea, warm milk (there's some truth to that 1) Lavender baths before bed, yoga/stretching before bed, and there's a new product that's kind of similar to 5 hour energy but, in reverse: http://www.5stagesleepshot.com/

I work in research and saw that cherry (or tart) juices may help too, haven't tried it yet but I do like wine before bed :)

  • I also suggest he try taking melatonin. It's not supposed to leave you with the groggy/zombie feeling in the morning like other sleeping pills will.
  • Congratz on 3 months! That's great!

I wish I did. My only segestion is a new pillow (like a memory foam from Brokestone). After I got sick I didn't sleep well at all (tossing and turning, waking up several times, napping restlessly throughout the day). For some reason a nice pillow helped a lot.

  • I agree with E. DH got a "fancy" pillow as he called it. He got one of the memory foam pillows at Meijer and he loves he. He sleeps better...he's still a light sleeper, but I don't think he's necessarily up as much any more.

  • About half of the over the counter sleeping pills are just benadryl either by itself or mixed with a pain reliever. So if benadryl makes him sleepy, I'd try that. I know you said he didn't want to try those things, but it shouldn't be habit forming. (I'm a pharmacist, so I know a little about this...)

Also, is he getting exercise? I know if I sit on the couch all night I don't sleep as well, but if I do a little house work or take a walk that usually helps me sleep better.

  • I went out at lunch yesterday & bought him some sort of 'sleep aid'. I gave it to him last night saying he didn't have to take it, but I bought them just incase. Well, he ended up taking one! He got up for work before me, I asked him how he slept and he said 'better'.

I like the pillow suggestion! I might look into that..

And he is working out, he took a night off last night, but worked out sat - tues.

I did find out he hasn't been eating much for lunch. Not sure if that's related, but I packed him a good lunch last night. Told him to try that for a week or so & see if that helps.
