Mini vent....my company keeps preaching life-work balance but they overload the mgmt employees with work. I really wish they would realize how it feels to hear the higher ups telling new employees that they encourage a life-work balance yet the mid-managerment employees are totally swamped because there is an overall staff shortage that no one will talk about.
Come on senior mgmt...we are struggling! Don't tell me to relax and enjoy the weekend when you are also telling me to hit deadlines and putting crazy amounts of work on my plate. Why tell me that you might require me to work 6 days a week yet we are supposed to have balance. 48 hours plus vs. 1 day off. Not balanced
Re: Life Balance ...my butt
My first 3 jobs out of college required 60+ hours a week for everyone. That was standard and 48 would have felt like tons of free time. Currently I work maybe 36 hours a week and I now actually have tons of free time.
It's all relative. Your bosses might actually feel like 48 hours a week is a healthy balance. If the whole company holds this view and it's important to you I would try to find a new job.
Sadly, my company pulls the same ***. We used to be a group of 40+ people. We're now 12 having to carry the same load.
Even better, when I interviewed, I asked how overtime worked. They told me I would never work overtime. Well, technically, they're right. I put in all kinds of hours, but because I'm overtime exempt, it's not called overtime.
uuuuuuuuugh, me too!! I work 7-6 and some days it's 7-7 n a 5 day schedule. & it takes me 20-45 minutes (stupid traffic) to get to/from work. I used to love my job (2 moves ago) but now with these absurd hours I can't find the time to do anything I actually WANT to do, since when I get home I have to make dinner and then I get about an hour of relaxing in before I have to go to bed. Luckily (I guess) my FH & I live 500+ miles apart so we don't have to juggle that part. I mean, we still struggle with getting to talk or Skyping, since he works weird hours (and works 2 jobs and is heavily volunteering at church).
We had a big meeting about the work-life balance and the result was "sometimes you just need to leave work and go home, but only if it works for the project." newsflash: if we're not at HQ or in one of the regional offices, it never works for the project to go home! Rawr...
Oh I hate companies like that too! I work on a client's site attached to a local corporate office (that I actually never see). The main office is about 4 hours away. If we're prevented from coming into work due to the client site saying to stay home or a natural disaster or whatever it becomes "liberal leave" meaning we can use our vacation time, but since the main office is open, it is still considered a work day and the company won't cover it.
When Isabel came through here we got hit first. Client site closed. Company wasted no time sending out the notices about their inclement weather policy and to use our vacation time. A few hours later it hit our main office and then all the sudden the 'admin' charge codes came out so we didn't have to use vacation.
I so want to work somewhere else....
ohmygosh, that's so obnoxious!! I can't believe they would make you use vacation days because of weather..... It's one thing to say "Okay, you can't come in so that's fine, but we still expect you to work from home". Although... working from home never works for me.... haha!
