Holiday Functions At Work

What does your work do for the employees at the holidays? We used to have big parties at a hotel, and they were actually fun! Now, we do very low key among each office. Some places do a breakfast, some lunch, and some have you bring your kids in for the afternoon with Santa. Mine is usually a lunch, and my group (HR) is in charge of planning. I am bored with the same thing year after year. Even the food is the same caterer. Someone suggested making a week of festivities leading up to Christmas. For example: Cookies and Cocoa one day, bring a canned good in and wear jeans, festive day with holiday colored clothes, holiday lunch, etc...... Yes, I know some are sort of silly but they may go over well. Anyway, I would love to hear your suggestions and/or what your work place does. TIA

Re: Holiday Functions At Work

  • This year we are having a cocktail party on campus.  This is the first that they're doing this - it used to be a big casual family gathering.

I help organize an ornament exchange for the women on campus.  It's a small event and we do it potluck style...apps, dessert and wine.  It's always a lot of fun.

  • We are boring.  We have a holiday lunch in the office.  Always the same caterer and usually something similar is ordered.

  • This year, we are doing a potluck lunch for our office. There is also a big university party which I don't go to because I hate those gatherings.

At my last job, we used to do a dip/appetizer party. One year we also did a cookie exchange which was fun.

  • Ugh I have to plan our holiday event. This year it's at a museum, and it's the whole nine yards: dinner, dancing, raffle prizes. BUT I can tell you that like, maybe 1/2 our staff show up.

  • This year is the first time since 2005 that we are doing anything at my job- and it's because we have a new supervisor who is actually nice :)  She is taking us out (it's just me, her, and a few ladies who run programs at our site- so maybe 7 of us total will go) to dinner next Tuesday night- nowhere fancy, but it will be nice to get together.

Our larger District (I work for city government) usually does a party at a place like Chickie's or something, but I haven't heard if we are or not...and I'm not sure if I will go if they do or not.  The past couple times I went it was just terrible and people were just out of control drunk and rude...not worth my time to find a sitter and go.

  • My current job sucks for holidays....we have a catered lunch in the office and you get a hairy eyeball if you stay and socialize for more than a half hour or so.

My previous job (with Erbur and Esyn) has an organization sponsored xmas lunch off location (lowes hotel curtis center etc). Spouses and kids are invited, the kids get breakfast at the office, santa comes to the lunch to hand out presents to the kids and employees can leave for the day after lunch
(which usually results in a very early happy hour(s)). The organization also has a social club that sponsors various smaller events during the weeks leading up to the holiday like a gift exchange, cube decorating, and cookie baking/tasting contest.

I personally like the idea of a week of small festivities leading up to a nice luncheon or maybe a happy hour/cocktail hour where spouses are invited. But I also like games at bridal/baby showers so I could be an anomaly!

  • This is the first company I've worked at in years that actually has a holiday party. Our office wide party is at the Franklin Institute this Friday night. I'm very excited, it's a whole she-bang, including the Titanic Exhibit. We are also having a smaller team holiday lunch at a local restaurant. At my old work we would have a potluck lunch with my team. We would do themes like bring a traditional dish that you always have at the holidays. It was interesting and a little different to see what everyone brought in.
  • I am catering in BBQ for the team that I manage. Our bigger group/DC office has a big holiday party in late Jan/early Feb at a hotel. Its the band, open bar, basically a wedding with door prizes thing and pretty fun. DH and I had a great time last year and will definitely be going this year. Although.... DH swears that I might as well work on the Big Bang Theory based on some of the conversations he had at the last one.

  • We have always done a huge fancy party at the Moshulu that involves a DJ, game show, cash booth (think money flying around in a glass cage), extravagant gifts, etc. My boss is nuts.

This year because of finances, they're scaling back. BUT we're still having a luncheon at a nice restaurant near our office (The St. James, for those of you in the Ardmore area), and I'm sure my boss still has some surprises up his sleeve.

  • This. Except we get crazy and open a couple bottles of red wine to wash down the hoagies. Makes for an interesting rest of the day...!

  • My place does a company wide party at a hall on Southampton Rd. I have never been. Each department then does their own thing as well, with the managers paying for it, or a portion of it. My department, which is in another building near University City does nothing. My boss is a debbie downer, The building I work in, they are doing something new this year, and this is the 2nd time, me and my one cw have been invited to their holiday luncheons (we've been in this building for 5 years). They are having a party at Chickie's. there is a charge of 30 pp, but if there is enough interest, the director is going to pay for a majority of it, and then we just have to pay a smaller amount.
  • Ours is a combo of all the family owned offices at their family owned bar, it used to be a lame luncheon in the basement, now it is up in the bar area and okay. Usually on a Friday starting like 5 so office closes early but no spouses invited, just employees. It is nice but I never stay long since it is a good drive, I won't drink and drive and I have already been out of the house since 7:30 am, I just want to get home. This office (5 people) is doing their own thing and going to dinner one night at Chima on their own dime, not company sponsored, still debating if I am going or not

  • My summer job has a party at some union hall up in Northeast Philly. You have to pay for a ticket. I have never gone. My real job we usually just go out to lunch. I always find this awkward, even after 15 years. No clue why.

  • Our department is having a Holiday party but it costs $30 per person and is on a Friday night.

I actually work Friday nights so my Co-worker and I won't be able to attend...

  • Looks like we're having a potluck that will be more of a graze and wander in and out of the conference room all day. Not sure when it's happening though.
  • My company is way too big for us to ever possibly try to have a party but our business unit is going to Salt Creek Grille in Princeton for lunch. It starts at 11:30 and none of us will be returning to work after. These 11:30 a.m. holiday lunches have lasted until 3 a.m. in past years so I'm fully expecting that to happen again. Luckily my work friends are awesome so it's fun to drink with all of them. Especially on the company's dime.

Yum, I love Salt Creek! I haven't been to the one in Princeton, but I assume it's pretty much the same as the one in Rumson.
