Single Family Unit within Condo Complex

Thoughts?

We're looking to buy a 3 bedroom 2 bath home with garage and basement. There's a listing in a condo complex for sale that has everything we need and then some for a lot less $ than other Single family homes we've looked at in the area.

Re: Single Family Unit within Condo Complex

  • I am a condo owner now....just keep in mind that with a condo, comes all the hassle of sharing everything with other people....although they are good deals if you don't want any yard work or extensive maintance. But just keep in mind you won't have your own backyard, privacy, driveway, mailbox.....you will have to deal with noise, car traffic, nosey neighbors, messy people who leave cigg butts around the yard, don't pick up dog poo and many other wonderful things like that. I've been in condo life for 7 years and am ready to get the heck out once hubby and I save up some more money....but for a starter place it's fine and affordable.
  • This unit is a freestanding house and has it's own driveway and backyard with a huge deck. I believe you can opt in or out of the HOA fees and save $ by doing your own yard work. It's also a dead end off of a dead end in a very quiet complex. There is a walkway that goes past part of the house, so i may be picking up dog poop if we decide to get it :)

IMHO, it all depends on the size of your current and future family. Many posters here have regretted buying only 3 bedroom homes and so feel crowded with additional children coming along. But if your family size isn't going to change and it fills your square footage needs, then the only other idea to cover would be that condos can be tough to resell in some markets.
  • Ohh, then I would go for it!!! Seems to me most of the free standing condo's in our area are for 55+, which stinks
  • I cannot speak to the particular home, because that really depends on your needs. However, I live in a condo complex and love it.

  • My parents live in a single unit, in a gated community that is mostly double townhouse units attached. They actually built theirs with the original developer and had to pay a premium not to be attached to another unit. Although my parents love their neighborhood and most residents are older active adults, so they have their own parties and such, their neighbor who are young professionals regret buying a unit there. They are the only young couple with a toddler and they feel so isolated and left out of all the community activities.

BTW, I am not so sure how opting out would work, because with condo/townhouse HOA there is a lot more covered than just the yard maintenance, so call the HOA and get all the details yourself to be sure.
