How to keep white clothes white (w/o using bleach)

Hi all... Recently I had started taking my daughter's white socks and soaking them in diluted bleach before putting them in with the rest of the whites in the laundry load. It didn't seem to irritate her skin, and it was making her grungy white socks beautifully pure white again. However, I have noticed that the bleach has caused the elasticity in the socks to break down. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to keep white clothes white without using bleach? Thanks!

  • Doing the same but with Oxiclean?
  • I use brite white right in the laundry load. It's an additive that works beautifully.
    CJ :-)
  • I use something called "advance" cleaner. It can be used in the wash with whites. My family buys it once a year from a guy who comes from georgia to sell it. It may be a good option to look into.

  • One alternative nobody mentioned is hydrogen peroxide. It's best if you use a spray bottle to mist diluted peroxide. Make sure you're using peroxide meant to treat wounds. Simply mist, let sit for a few minutes, rinse, repeat until done. I've used it a few times when I was out of bleach and it was a great alternative. Hope this was helpful!
  • We use borax in every wash. Love it!

  • White garments, especially, should be cleaned often. Letting a stain sit, can cause the stain to oxidize and leave a yellowing discoloration. The invisible things that cause staining are generally the most detrimental to clothing. For example, perfumes and hairsprays can cause yellowing if left untreated on soiled garments. The same can be said for clear liquids containing sugars; these will break down and cause discoloration.

  • We've been using Nature Bright, which is basically a more natural version of oxiclean.

So far, so good!  I think Seventh Generation makes something similar, too.
