Another BC question and need advice

Okay, so I am at a loss of what to do. As I have mentioned before, I am going on some very serious meds in a few weeks. I was told I would need to use two forms of BC. So, I went on the pill (which seems to be going okay now) and use condoms. Well, yesterday as my doctor was going over one of the medications (I will be on these meds for a year, but one of them only 3 months), it came out that I actually need a 3rd form of BC. A third?! He went over the options (diapraphm and IUD were two of them). Of course I made a joke that the best way to prevent pregnany was to not even have sex. He laughed and said "well, yes, it does get cumbersome." But, seriously. When I told H about it last night he said "I won't even touch you." I'm like that's 3 months!

Do any of you have the IUD or experience with it? I'm thinking this might be my best option. I don't like the idea of a diaphram. I just don't like putting foreign objects in me (I don't even use tampons. I hate them). (I think there were some other options, but I don't recall what they were.)The reason for a 3rd is because the medication will compromise the hormones in the pills, and there is that off chance that a condom could break. And if I get pregnant, it will either kill the baby or severly deform it. So, obviously I will not chance it. I plan to talk with my doctor about it. But I wanted some advice from you ladies. I really don't know what to do.

  • I have a nonhormonal IUD and I love it! I didn't find the pain when it was going in to be too bad at all. I had some cramps the day of that just felt like period cramps and then after that just some light cramping for a week or so. My periods are heavier now than they used to be but that's pretty much the only downside for me. I don't think ill ever go back to the pill. I highly recommend it.

  • I had a mirena iud for 4 years before having it removed in April.  Some initial cramping, then light periods. If I have to back to BC I would do an iud again.

  • Thank you ladies. I'll talk to my doctor about it. I wasn't sure if it was hormonal or not, but good to know a non hormonal one is available, since that's what I would need.
  • I would say an IUD but I have never used either so I can't say based on personal expierences. However I would ask for one that would work with your BC pill since you wouldn't want 2 hormonal BC options going in you. That could be way too many hormones. I would also ask about side effects of them being combined like that since most people don't usually use a BC pill and an IUD together.
  • My friend has the nonhormonal IUD (Paraguard) and loves it.  Can't have any hormonal BC since it caused her to have a stroke.

3 forms of BC?  Seems a little overkill, no?  If you figure BC pills are 99% effective when taken properly, and condoms are almost as successful.  Would it be a big risk to your health if you were to accidentally get pregnant or something?  I just feel like the odds of getting pregnant on 2 forms of BC is SO small it just seems crazy to worry about a 3rd.

Would withdrawing count?  Or tracking your fertility and being abstinent when you know you are ovulating?  Some people use those as forms of BC...just a thought.

  • From your post it sounds as though you only need the third form of BC for 3 months?  If that's the case, do you really want to get an IUD only to have it removed 3 months later?  Or are you thinking it would be long-term?  If it's really only needed for 3 months, I honestly might just deal with the diaphragm or see if there are any other options available to you.  I always think of IUDs as more "long-term" options.  Just a thought.  Good luck to you, sounds like a huge hassle!  I know some meds require 2 forms of BC, but I've not heard of one requiring three.

exactly this for me too! Actually, my period didn't get heavier.

  • I'd say look into some of the natural family planning (NFP) methods- honestly my parents had 3 (planned) kids in a 34 year marriage using the temps/charting/symptoms method.

Also if you look at some of the NFP stuff (or whatever the bump people call it) you at least can learn enough that you can make a decision as to what you want to do.

I know changing/starting meds can be a very stressful time. Take a deep breath and I think using 1, 2, or 3 methods... whatever you decide will work for you.

     Take care

  • Condoms are only 85% effective, that's 1 in 6! I almost did the nonhormonal IUD (Paragard) because I had heard such great things about it and my doctor said she loved it too. But 1. It was actually really expensive and 2. I was so uncomfortable with the birth control "methods" it used. The way it works reminded me of an army protecting different parts of the capital. First, it creates a barrier for sperm to get anywhere near the eggs. If it makes it through, it protects the egg from fertilization. If it gets that far (and this is the part I'm not comfortable with) it prevents the fertilized egg from implanting onto the uterine wall. I wasn't ok with that, so I went for a cheaper BC pill that my insurance was willing to pay for. Hormonal IUD should work alright except that if you are taking hormonal pills also, would they interfere with each other? I don't know, just something to think about. No one told me about the nonhormonal IUD, I read about it in the pamphlet my dr. sent me and was stunned that I had never heard about it before.
