UPDATE:Melissa and Doug cupcakes

Anyone have these?  DD got them for Christmas last year and we immediately took the markers away because I didn't feel she could be responsible with them.  They were unearthed the other day and I let her play with them.

The ink from the "dry erase" markers never dries!  She put them on the shelf in her kitchen, and more than 24 horus later Nolan pulled them down and was covered in green "icing".  What's even worse is that these apparently aren't very washable.  I scrubbed and scrubbed his hands and face and he still had a faint green ring around his  mouth.

I checked the reviews on Amazon and it's mentioned that the markers are not ideal, but people still gave it a high rating.

UPDATE: I emailed Melissa and Doug CS after this incident. Within a day they emailed me back asking to call me to discuss. They assured me that the markers are thoroughly tested and non-toxic and asked me to send them the batch number from the toy. She asked me to pick out another toy for DD and with the toy they'd send me a shipping label so that I could send the markers to them so they can test them to see what is happening. They also offered to send DS a toy since he was the "victim". AWESOME CS. I didn't ask for any of that. I really just emailed them thinking they would want to know. They're sending DD this http://www.melissaanddoug.com/scoop-stack-ice-cream-cone-playset and DS this http://www.melissaanddoug.com/stacking-cars-baby-toddler-toys

Re: UPDATE:Melissa and Doug cupcakes

  • We don't buy I almost bought them a couple years ago but was nervous about the markers. We were just at a friends house around Thanksiving and they had them. She complained about them too! Said the markers got all over things. Their youngest's mouth was all blue because he was "eating" the cupcake.

  • We have them and S loves them but I only let her use them at her play table and we put the whole set away (out of reach) when she's done playing with it to prevent exactly what you're dealing with. Can you just break them out as your kids ask for them??
  • I'm going to try the regular washable markers on them, and if that doesn't work, I'll probably only let her decorate them with stickers.

I think this was the first Melissa and Doug toy I was disappointed with.

  • Madeline fell in love with these cupcakes at Pottery Barn Kids.  I ordered them from Amazon and just removed the icing markers.  She has a blast just using the other parts.  Problem solved.  She did get a ton of marker on her from just holding the already "iced" cupcakes in the PBK store.

We did just buy the Melissa and Doug Sounds shape puzzle and half the time the sounds do not work.  I'm going to contact M&D since I have never had an issue with one of their toys being defective.

  • maybe using the Crayola dry erase crayons on them would be less messy?
  • She's been playing with them for a year with out the markers and still had fun with them. I'll try a few options like regular washable markers or dry erase crayons, but mostly, I'm just really suprised at the poor design of the product.

  • Well that is great customer service.  I have always enjoyed their toys. I am glad to support a company that takes complaints so seriously.
  • Melissa and Doug also agreed to replace Madeline's sound puzzle.  I seriously love M&D.  I'm glad to hear they hooked you guys up as well :-)
