First Married Christmas

So although J and I have been together for Christmas, this is our first married Christmas.

We got our first Christmas tree (first real tree for both of us!)

So far, the tradition is we go to Jared's parent's house on Christmas Eve, then my side on Christmas day. It works for now since we live only 3 hours away, but I'm sure it will change when we move up to Seattle. And then change again when we have kids, since we'll want to wake up to Santa in our own home. But I love the holidays. I love spending time with family.

What are your Christmas traditions that you are carrying on? And what traditions will you be changing as your lives are changing? :)

Re: First Married Christmas

  • Well, we put up the Christmas tree with my parents and my siblings on Thanksgiving. We don't usually put it up on Thanksgiving but it was the only day all of us were there and it was really important to my mom.

We put up our tree the day after Thanksgiving, which is when both sets of our parents do it. It was really fun to decorate the apartment and listen to Christmas music with Santa hats on = ). I'm still doing it slowly with things I find on Pinterest = )

Christmas this year will be crazy trying to fit everyone in. I don't even wanna think about it lol.

     01.21.2012---> I married a redhead I'm crazy about.

  • DH and I have been together for 3 years. The first time he ever met my parents was on Christmas 2009. He moved in with me in June of 2010 so we've kinda of been doing the holidays together ever since.

We go to his family's house for their annual Christmas Eve Party. Then we drive home the next morning and go to my parents house. We go to church with them and then we open up presents and have an early dinner with my family. Then DH and I come home and have a quiet evening opening up gifts, just the two of us.

We put up our tree this past Monday but we don't decorate it until a few days before Christmas. While growing up my parents had the tradition to decorate the tree on Chirstmas eve so anytime before Dec. 20, just seems strange to me. It's so beautiful with just the white lights on it for two weeks.

  • We are going home.  Thats as far as I know. Since we have been together since 2008, we have spent Christmas together.

Our apt is too small for any decorations, but I like to go out.

PS. I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR CAT!

  • I have been working on our Christmas Tree. I agree it is a big deal with it being our first married Christmas. It is our 8th Christmas together, so not much is changing.

Christmas Eve we go to a party with the ILs every year, to a family that they know through church. Christmas morning we will get up and drive to Js grandparents house to open up gifts. My parents and his parents, along with his brothers, join us there, and sometimes one of his aunts and cousins.  Then we will go to his extended family, again with my parents in tow. We will get together with my aunt and uncle the day after Christmas. That way, we don't have to deal with her crazy family.

I was really adament about getting our own tree this year, even though we still live with my parents. I am ready to get it decorated, but I am scared at the same time, because one of my cats is still trying to climb it. We put sand bags on top of the legs, but I am still scared up putting some of the more fragile ornaments on.

  • I love real trees.  Yours is beautiful.  And I love your cat.  He/She is huge.  And so fluffy.  I just want to cuddle.

DH and I have been living together for a few years, so not our first Christmas living together.  We usually rotate Christmas and Thanksgiving between our parents.  One year we have Thanksgiving with my parents and Christmas with his, the next year we switch.  At least that's what we've been doing.  Once Lily is here, we are planning on always being at our house to wake up to Santa.  That means we'll probably see his family for Christmas since they live where we do.  My family will have to travel to us.  But we want to start some of our own traditions.

Our city does a huge light display in the park that is packed every weekend.  It's actually where DH proposed to me.  One of our traditions is to go drive through or walk through and see all the lights.

Tara, I love that idea of having the tree but not decorating it until right before Christmas.  I might do that next year.  Partly because Lily will be around it so less time for her to mess with the decorations and partly to try out a new tradition.

Oh no! This must be the same cat that you have to hold while the other cats are eating! Am I right?

Ironically, no. It is the little one. Thankfully he only weights about 9 lbs. But still, I caught him in it 3 times already, and one time, I found the tree laying on the floor.

  • Aww thanks! He's definitely my baby. I've had him since he was 2 weeks old and bottle fed him :) I'll go find a picture to post of him as a baby. It's pretty ridiculous how big he's gotten.
