Need your opinion please

I got into an argument with one of my friends about a week back. The argument was over the fact that she thought J and I were being too picky about the house that we want to buy, and that she thinks I am too picky about things in general. Like for example that I wanted an all clad set of pots and pans, instead of doing what she did and going to Sam's club and buying a set for $100.

So her comment was that we aren't going to find the perfect house, and we shouldn't find an even close to perfect house because we are going to move in a few years anyway. We should move into something small, with no amenities because it is what is cheep.  I feel that we shouldn't spend money on something we don't love, regardless of how long we will be there.

My question for you is, is she right, can one be too picky in buying a house? I just need an outside second opinion, because she is very opinionated and it has been weighing on my mind recently.

Re: Need your opinion please

  • In regards to cookware.....I'm a full believer in spending extra money to get the good cookware.  A good investment now can possibly last you the rest of your life and there is a world of difference between the good stuff and the crappy stuff.  I LOVE my Calphalon cookware!

As for the house.....yes, it is possible to be too picky.  If you're turning down houses due to the color of the paint, you're being too picky.  However, I don't buy houses based on "This can be fixed, or that can be changed".  I've been in my house 10 yrs now.  Almost none of those items have been done due to the financial outlay required.  Also, a house is a MAJOR purchase.  You should be happy with your purchase.  Especially if you intend for this to be your forever house.  If not, I could see letting a few things go in order to save money, but not anything that would drive you nuts if you ended up not moving and wouldn't be willing to put up the money to change.

As for your friend.....different people have different priorities.  You're the one who has to live with your choices.  Not her.....

  • No, I am not talking about things like paint color. Things like the sizes of rooms, and the layout of the rooms. Things that could not be changed. Because more than likely we are going to paint no matter what.

Yeah, I didn't figure you were.  Just threw that out there as I used to watch a lot of those home shows where people wouldn't put in offers because of paint color.

I agree. I don't even watch those shows because there are so many people who are so out there.

  • No you should get the house you are comfortable in. I have settled for cheaper and I hated it. My anxiety got worse and I never felt like it was home. The ome I just bought is perfect and I look forward to going there everyday. Sometimes I would rather stay there than go out its so nice.

Please stick to your guns, you will find your perfect home and you will know its the one when you walk in.

Mark said everything I wanted to say.  Right down to the cookware part.  I love my Calphalon.   But I completely agree about the house.  Don't settle for something just because you'll only be there for a few short years.  It will make those years miserable and who knows, you might end up being there even longer.  So get something you love and want to call home.

  • I agree with what everyone else said. Regardless of whether you're going to stay there a year or a lifetime, I'd want to be happy with it. And also like Mark said, a house is a major decision and a big investment. Be happy with the things you can't change and change the things you can!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone. I feel a lot more comfortable now. I love her dearly, but her opinions some times really don't agree with mine. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going crazy.
