applying on craigslist

I have never wanted to apply for a job on craigslist for security reasons, but a colleague of mine has had some recent success with it.

I sent an inquiry e-mail for a job listing and someone wrote back asking that I send my resume. I have no information other than the e-mail address (greatrecruiters@...) and then a reply from a man's name via his i-phone. Do you think it's ok to remove my contact info. from my resume to send it? I know that could hurt my chances, but I want to make sure this is legit before handing out my contact info.

What do you think?

Re: applying on craigslist

  • I think that sounds like a solid plan. Maybe you could mention in the email that you were apprehensive about giving out your contact info over craigslist and that if they are interested that they could email back and set up a meeting?
  • Could you possibly do research on how legit the job posting is? Would you be working for a specific company? Or an individual? I think it is okay that he checked his email with his iphone. I wouldn't think that would be a cause for concern.

If there is a way you can research him or the company that the job position is associated with, I would do that first before submitting your resume.

If you do decide to set up an interview with him, if he does it outside an office, make sure it is in a public place like a coffee shop. I have actually seen employers host interviews at coffee shops a few times. I think that would be safe.

  • I have advertised jobs on craigslist but always made sure the applicant could figure out exactly what my company was.

I have applied to jobs on craigslist but again, only when I have everything about the company first -- name, street address, real contact person, phone # etc.

I would do a bit more digging but I'd probably do as you suggest & take my contact info off the resume but I'd tell them you did it for security reasons & you'd be happy to provide them with info about you once they reciprocate.  Personally I wouldn't work for somebody who had a problem with that.

If you don't get this job b/c you were cautious, so what?  There are other jobs out there.  If you give your contact info out to a nut really bad things could happen.  You can't be too careful.
