Not a good OB appointment

I had my monthly check-up today and it didn't go well. The doctor told me that he's considering me pre-gestational diabetic. I passed my three hour but because I have PCOS he says he wants me on a Diabetic Diet. He also told me he be happy if I gained NO weight this entire pregnancy since I'm already overweight. I reminded him that 2 months ago he said 17lbs was fine for me to gain. He said, "Okay then try your best to keep it at 15lbs." Ugh. I've already gained three.

Also, he marked my chart as high risk. I'm not really sure why. I guess it's because of the pre GD. He didn't do a heatbeat check with the doopler. He said the baby is too small so it's probably too early to hear anything.

He also said that I will most likely continue to throw up during the entire pregnancy since I have acid reflux. Not what I wanted to hear.

So, all in all this was a pretty crappy appointment and now I'm super bummed.

Re: Not a good OB appointment

  • Awww, sorry for such a crappy appointment.  I think if you have GD they mark you as high risk, so that would make sense for why he marked that.  Sort of, still not making sense why he's jumping the gun on that if you passed your test.  Some doctors are very cautious though.

As for the weight, I think I've been stressing about it way more than my doctor.  I've definitely gained more than the recommended amount by this point in pregnancy but my doctor keeps telling me that I'm doing well and she isn't worried.  So again, I think it's just a personal thing for each doctor.

I'd be upset too about the no doppler thing.  He could have at least tried.  My doctor did even when she said it was probably too early.  You just never know, they might be in the right position to hear it.  Lily never was but at least my doctor tried.  I'd request one next time if he isn't going to do one.

     HUGS to you Momma!

  • Thanks ladies. Yes, I would have liked him to have tried for the heartbeat. He thought I'd be too upset if he didn't find it and he said he didn't want to cause me to worry. I should have insisted that he tried anyway.

Michelle, I think you're right about different doctor's having different opinions, especially when it comes to weight gain. I'm just going to watch what I eat, lay off the sweets and hopefully I'll be okay. I'm not going to worry if I gain 20lbs throughout this pregnancy. Also, I really hope to start working out again soon.

  • Tara at my 12wk appointment the doctor didn't even attempt to use the doppler. She said the baby was too small. I personally think it was a combination of me being overwieght and the baby benig small but she was being nice about it. I do think you are high risk now beecause of the GD and I'm willing to bet you passed the 3hr but maybe your numbers were ont he high side. Try not to stress about it, they're going to be keeping a closer eye on you which isn't a bad thing!

I didn't realize that it is harder to hear the heartbeat if you are overweight. I guess that makes sense. Maybe that's what my doctor was thinking too but he was just being nice. As far as the 3 hour test I wasn't on the high side.

    Here are my results:

    glucose - 2 hour 120    65-155 mg/dL

    glucose - 1 hour 147    65-180 mg/dL

    glucose - fasting 74     65-95 mg/dL

    glucose - 3 hour 88      65-140 mg/dL

How are you doing in your pregnancy?

  • Hmm then maybe your doctor is just being catious.

Things are going well. I find out the gender on the 19th and noticed that today will be the last day I wear my normal pants to work. The poor zipper only went up an inch! Thank goodness for hair ties!

That's wonderful! I'm happy for you. The 19th is soooo soon! Be sure to post on here that evening! I'm still in my pre-pregnancy pants. I'm not sure for how much longer though. Maybe I'll be able to wear them until Jan. 1. I know my mom is buying me maternity pants for Christmas.

  • I am sorry your appointment didn't go well Tara. I can't believe you haven't heard the baby's heartbeat yet. My first appointment was at 9 weeks and they were able to find the heartbeat right away. I wonder if it has to do with your weight like someone else suggested. I would be going crazy being that far along and not hearing the heartbeat yet. As for GD I know my MIL is worried because she thinks I eat a ton of sugar, so we'll see how that goes.

I believe I had my first episode of morning sickness today. I had to have the teacher next door watch my students so I could run to the bathroom and throw up :( I am hoping it was a fluke and does not return tomorrow.

  • Thanks Megan. Nope I haven't heard the heartbeat yet. Thank God I've seen it twice on an u/s or I would be going crazy.

I hope your m/s gets better. Mine has not let up at all. I'm still throwing up daily. Today I threw up three times. Not fun!

  • Tara- I am sorry that it did not go well, but think of it this way. It is good that your doctor is being cautious. It is better to be safe than sorry. I hope that you have a while until you have to switch to the maternity pants. I do hope that you feel better soon!

Am- I am glad to hear that things are going well!

Megan- I hope that it is not an every day occurrence!
